PUTHANDU - TAMIL NEW YEAR

Puthandu  which is also known as “Puthuvarudam” or the “New Year”.

It is the first day of year of the Tamil calendar which is celebrated by Tamilians in the Tamilian month Chittirai .

It comes on or after April 14 th.

The same day is observed in South and South East Asia such as Vishu in Kerala and Vaisakhi in north India.

This festival is mainly celebrated in Tamil nadu, Srilanka, Malaysia, Singapore.

The Chittirai Thiruvizha is celebrated in many temples of Tamil Nadu. Such as Kanchipuram Kamatchi Temple Sri Rangam Ranganathar Temple Chidambaram Natarajar Temple Madurai Meenakshi Temple

A huge exhibhition is held, called Chittirai Porutkaatchi.

Special food in meal include like Rice, Sambar, kootu, Porital, Vada, Payasam, Sakkarai Pongal.

Tamil people wishes each other with their Greetings like “ Iniya Tamil Puthandu Vazhthukal “.
