Teachers’ Day: The Many Types of Teachers Bollywood Loves to Show Us

It’s Teachers’ Day in India, which means it’s time to think about the people who have shaped our lives in classrooms, corridors and sometimes even outside school. Teachers occupy a surprisingly large space in our memories, whether we admit it or not.

But the teachers we know in real life are rarely the same people Bollywood has taught us to recognise.

Hindi cinema has a habit of making teachers larger than life. They are usually saints, saviours, eccentrics or tyrants. They are memorable, certainly, but not always familiar. The ordinary teacher — the person who simply shows up every morning and gets through another day of teaching — seems to have been left outside the screenplay.

So, on Teachers’ Day, here are a few broad Bollywood teacher types.

The Eccentric and the Buffoon

Think of Virus from 3 Idiots . He is undoubtedly intelligent and intimidating, but the film also gives him a collection of eccentric habits. His barber arrives at a fixed time, and he listens to Western classical music while taking a nap because, apparently, even sleeping has to be multitasking.

Then there is Anupam Kher’s Mr Malhotra in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai , whose behaviour around Mrs Braganza occasionally wandered into outright buffoonery. And Rishi Kapoor’s character in Student of the Year , who develops an interest in a much younger PE instructor.

You might reasonably wonder how principals of major schools manage to keep the timetable running while simultaneously dealing with their own romantic distractions.

The Sexy(?)

This is probably the category that makes anyone who actually went to school raise an eyebrow.

Take Sushmita Sen in Main Hoon Na . With her wind-blown hair, chiffon sarees and perfectly styled blouses, she looks every bit the Bollywood heroine and perhaps considerably less like someone rushing between classrooms, checking notebooks and dealing with teenagers.

She is glamorous, yes. But realistic? Not exactly.

One can only imagine how many young viewers watched her and briefly reconsidered their career choices.

The Tyrant

Then comes the strict teacher — the one who seems to have personally declared war on teenage happiness.

Narayan Shankar in Mohabbatein fits the role perfectly. He is stern, uncompromising and seemingly allergic to fun. But his character is so rigid that it is difficult to imagine how someone like him would actually manage a large boarding school filled with privileged teenage boys.

And then there is Raj Aryan, played by Shah Rukh Khan. He teaches through violin music, pastel-coloured sweaters, dreamy expressions and, naturally, lessons about love. In a school.

No wonder Narayan Shankar dislikes him. Someone has to remember that the students also have exams.

The Exceptional Teacher

Bollywood does occasionally give us teachers who feel more rounded because teaching is central to their stories.

Think of Ram Shankar Nikumbh in Taare Zameen Par , Naina Mathur in Hichki or Anand Kumar in Super 30 . These characters matter because their teaching is not merely background decoration. Their work changes lives and drives the story forward.

But perhaps that is also the problem. Bollywood seems to believe that if a teacher is going to be important, they must be extraordinary.

No room for average?

Real teachers are often much less cinematic.

They teach algebra, correct assignments, prepare question papers, supervise exams and somehow convince 40 teenagers to pay attention before lunch. Others spend their days helping tiny pre-nursery children take their first steps into formal education.

Many teachers barely get a chance to sit during class. And when the school day ends, their work doesn’t necessarily end with it.

There are notebooks to check, lessons to prepare, papers to set and parents to respond to.

Perhaps that is the teacher we should celebrate most: not the saviour, not the tyrant, not the glamorous movie character, but the ordinary person who keeps showing up.
