The Significance of Shaheedi Diwas
Every year on June 10, Sikhs worldwide observe the martyrdom day of Sri Guru Arjun Dev Ji, known as ‘Shaheedi Diwas.’ This day, falling on the 24th of Jeth in the Sikh calendar, holds profound spiritual importance. Guru Arjun Dev Ji was the first martyr of the Sikh religion and is celebrated for his immense contributions and sacrifices.
Historical Background
India. He was the son of Guru Ramdas and Mata Bhani, and his maternal lineage included Guru Amardas and Guru Ramdas as well. At just 18 years old, he became the fifth Sikh Guru in 1581, following his father’s death. His tenure was marked by significant developments, including the construction of the Golden Temple in Amritsar in 1604 and the compilation of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism.
However, his life was tragically cut short in 1606 when he was imprisoned, tortured, and executed by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. This act of martyrdom has left an indelible mark on Sikh history and is commemorated annually with deep reverence.
