AIMIM’s Triumph in Hyderabad

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has emerged victorious in the recent Hyderabad local bodies MLC (Member of Legislative Council) election, held after a significant gap of 22 years. The party’s candidate, Mirza Riyaz ul Hasan, won decisively, receiving 63 votes against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Gautham Rao, who garnered only 25 votes.

Election Context and Dynamics

This election drew considerable attention as it was the first time in over two decades that the local bodies seat was contested. The polling took place on April 23, with 112 eligible voters, including 81 corporators from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and 31 ex-officio members, comprising nine MPs, 15 MLAs, and seven MLCs. In a significant electoral dynamic, AIMIM began with a solid base of 49 votes, largely supported by its corporators, and managed to attract some additional backing from members of other parties.

The Political Landscape Ahead

Though major parties like Congress and BRS opted out of this election, speculations are rife that their members may have indirectly supported AIMIM. With the BJP’s strength diluted by defections, their candidate managed only 25 votes, reflecting the challenging landscape they face.
