Adani calls Dharavi redevelopment most transformative project
sustainable mobility for every resident. Under the masterplan, compact mixed-use clusters will rise around new station hubs, combining affordable housing, vibrant street-level retail, community facilities, co-working spaces, and green terraces that promote social interaction and economic opportunity. Smart infrastructure will place utilities underground, harvest rainwater, recycle waste, and generate solar power, minimizing ecological impact while elevating quality of life. A digital mobility-as-a-service platform will unify ticketing, real-time information, and last-mile e-shuttle bookings, making daily journeys effortless for workers, students, seniors, and visitors alike. Historic lanes will be preserved through adaptive reuse, celebrating Dharavi’s entrepreneurial spirit in artisan markets, cultural centres, and innovation labs linked by shaded walkways and pocket parks. Safety will improve with well-lit streets, gender-inclusive design, and resilient flood-mitigation landscapes that respond to climate change. Participatory planning will anchor long-time residents as partners, offering clear rehabilitation paths, skills training, and ownership stakes, ensuring transformation benefits the community first and turns Dharavi into a global benchmark metropolis.
Ahmedabad: As the Adani Group sets out to build upon the existing socio-cultural and economic fabric of Dharavi, Group Chairman Gautam Adani declared on Tuesday that the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) is the group’s most transformative and ambitious initiative to date.
The DRP presents a unique opportunity to transform the lives of over a million Dharavikars by improving their ‘live-work’ environment, introducing high-quality infrastructure, and ensuring inclusive access to education, healthcare, and employment. The vision for Dharavi includes not just housing upgrades but the creation of a world-class urban district that integrates the aspirations of its people with cutting-edge urban planning.
“Families who have lived in narrow, congested lanes for decades will soon move to thoughtfully designed townships that feature spacious apartments, dual toilets, schools, hospitals, transit hubs, parks, and more.”
The Dharavi Master Plan is guided by three key principles: driving economic transformation through redevelopment, building a resilient ecological and infrastructural backbone, and creating an equitable environment where every resident benefits. A focus on green and open spaces includes a city-level park at the heart of Dharavi, surrounded by smaller, accessible community parks and playgrounds to promote well-being, interaction, and inclusive celebration.
The redevelopment emphasizes a highly transit-oriented model with seamless multi-modal connectivity. The centrepiece of this connectivity is the planned Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH) — a first-of-its-kind facility that will integrate inter-city, intra-city, suburban, metro, high-speed, and airport express rail lines.
With an inclusive design approach, integrated infrastructure, and community-first vision, Dharavi is poised to become a symbol of equitable urban transformation — a modern, sustainable, and thriving heart of Mumbai.
