Hyderabad braces for extremely heavy rains as IMD, GHMC, HYDRAA issue alerts

Hyderabad is gearing up for what could be the most intense spell of rain this monsoon season. Remain alert and plan their movements carefully over the next couple of days.

The forecast also warns of thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls accompanying the downpour. This heightened alert marks the first red-level weather warning for parts of Telangana during the current monsoon.

**GHMC’s special alert**

The civic body predicts rainfall between 80 mm and 150 mm within 36 hours, which can lead to severe waterlogging in several areas.

The GHMC has urged residents to avoid waterlogged streets and low-lying zones, monitor official updates, and take safety precautions. For emergencies, citizens can contact GHMC’s control room at 040-21111111 or dial 100. Officials have assured that emergency response teams are on standby to address flooding, fallen trees, and other rain-related incidents.

**IMD’s citywide forecast**

While the city will be under an orange alert on Wednesday and Thursday, it will move to a yellow alert for Friday and Saturday — still indicating the possibility of significant rainfall.

For Telangana, this is the first red alert of the season, issued for several districts where rain is expected to be extremely heavy. The IMD has advised people to plan travel carefully and remain indoors during intense spells of rain.

**Private forecasts echo official warnings**

The predictions are not limited to official agencies. Popular weather enthusiast T. Balaji, widely known for his accurate local forecasts, has also warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Hyderabad from Wednesday evening through Thursday evening.

“The coming 36 hours are crucial,” Balaji cautioned, adding that the rain intensity could disrupt normal life, especially in northern parts of the city.

**HYDRAA’s area-specific alert**

The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has issued an even more precise forecast, highlighting the northern parts of Hyderabad as the likely hotspots for extremely heavy rainfall.

According to HYDRAA, areas such as Medchal, Patancheruvu, Chandanagar, Miyapur, Gachibowli, Kukatpally, and Gajularamaram in the Cyberabad region could receive more than 15 cm of rain. The rest of the city is expected to get between 7 cm and 12 cm.

HYDRAA’s commissioner stated that rainfall intensity is expected to pick up from Wednesday afternoon, potentially causing traffic disruptions and flooding in susceptible localities.

With warnings from multiple agencies — IMD, GHMC, HYDRAA, and independent forecasters — authorities are urging residents to stay indoors during heavy spells, avoid unnecessary travel, and keep an eye on weather updates through official channels. Those who must travel should factor in possible delays due to waterlogging and traffic diversions.

Local authorities are preparing for quick response operations, including deploying rescue teams, clearing stormwater drains, and ensuring emergency equipment is in place.

As the city braces for this weather event, the clear message from all sides is caution. Hyderabadis are being asked to prepare for two days of challenging conditions, keep emergency numbers handy, and prioritize safety above all else.

With multiple alerts converging, Hyderabad’s residents will be watching the skies — and the rain gauges — very closely over the next 48 hours.
