Delhi BMW Crash: Woman Driver Sent to Judicial Custody, Bail Hearing on September 17
New Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday sent 38-year-old Gaganpreet Kaur, the woman accused of driving a BMW that fatally hit a senior Finance Ministry official and injured his wife.
Duty Magistrate Akanksha Singh passed the order after Kaur was produced before her at her residence. The court noted that custodial interrogation was not required at this stage. Senior advocate Vikas Pahwa, appearing on behalf of the accused, confirmed the development.
Along with sending Kaur to custody, the judge also issued notices to the Delhi Police and the victim’s family regarding her bail plea. Both parties have been directed to file their replies by September 17, the date when the concerned court will hear the matter.
The Tragic Crash
The incident occurred when Navjot Singh, 52, Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, was returning home with his wife, Sandeep Kaur, after offering prayers at Bangla Sahib Gurdwara. Their motorcycle was struck by a speeding BMW at Dhaula Kuan.
Navjot suffered fatal injuries and could not survive, while his wife was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The suddenness of the accident left the family and the Finance Ministry community in shock. Colleagues described Singh as a soft-spoken, dedicated officer who had given decades of service.
For Sandeep Kaur, the tragedy was doubly cruel. Not only did she lose her husband, she also sustained injuries herself and is now caught in the exhausting cycle of grief, recovery, and legal proceedings.
The Defence Argument
Advocate Pahwa, representing Gaganpreet Kaur, questioned the necessity of her arrest. he asked. He further argued that no recovery was to be made, nor was there a need to identify other accused, suggesting the arrest was unwarranted.
Pahwa also contended that the incident was not an intentional act. According to him, Gaganpreet even “tried her best to give them the medical treatment” after the crash.
The defence is expected to press these arguments strongly during the upcoming bail hearing.
Concerns Over Medical Reports
Meanwhile, police sources revealed that investigators are examining whether there was any tampering with the medical records of the accused, who underwent treatment at a hospital after the crash. Ensuring the authenticity of those reports has become an important part of the ongoing probe, as they could play a crucial role in establishing the sequence of events and the driver’s condition at the time of the accident.
The Wife’s Statement
In her statement to the police, Sandeep Kaur painted a painful picture of the moments following the accident. She recounted how she pleaded with the accused and her spouse to take them to the nearest hospital as her husband lay unconscious, desperately needing treatment. “I begged them, again and again, to help us,” she reportedly told officers.
Her words highlight the agony and helplessness victims often experience in the critical minutes after such crashes. For families, the immediate concern is not legalities but survival — and every passing second without medical aid can prove fatal.
The crash has reignited public debate about road safety and accountability in Delhi. The capital has long struggled with reckless driving incidents involving high-end cars, where questions of privilege and unequal access to justice often come to the forefront.
For many, the sight of an officer who dedicated his career to public service losing his life in such a senseless manner is deeply unsettling. The case also draws attention to the responsibility of drivers on city roads, where carelessness can devastate families in an instant.
The Road Ahead
As the case proceeds, all eyes will be on the court’s decision regarding Gaganpreet Kaur’s bail plea. While her defence argues that the arrest was unnecessary and that she attempted to help the victims, the victim’s family insists that justice must be pursued with seriousness. The Delhi Police, too, will be expected to demonstrate that the investigation is thorough, impartial, and free from interference.
For now, the legal battle continues, layered with grief, anger, and unanswered questions. For Sandeep Kaur and her family, the journey ahead is long — one that involves not just seeking justice for Navjot Singh but also coming to terms with a life irreversibly altered by a single moment on a busy Delhi road.
