Delhi on high alert after Red Fort blast
Police are randomly checking vehicles at markets, metro stations, railway and bus stations to prevent any suspicious activity.
New Delhi: The Delhi Police have been placed on high alert after a powerful explosion near the Red Fort metro station left at least 12 people dead and several others injured on Wednesday. The incident has sent shockwaves across the national capital, prompting an immediate and large-scale security response.
According to officials, massive checking drives are underway throughout the city, with police personnel and paramilitary forces deployed in heavy numbers at all major entry and exit points. Every vehicle entering or leaving Delhi is being thoroughly inspected as part of the tightened security arrangements.
Senior officers are personally supervising these operations at key interstate borders — including Ghazipur, Singhu, Tikri, and Badarpur — to ensure that no suspicious individuals or items slip through. The intensified checks are also being carried out at markets, metro stations, railway terminals, and bus stands to prevent any potential follow-up incidents.
A senior police officer said that all district units and specialised wings have been instructed to remain vigilant and to increase patrolling in crowded and sensitive areas. “We are taking no chances,” the officer stated. “The focus right now is on maintaining public confidence and ensuring the safety of every citizen.”
The explosion, which took place near the busy Red Fort metro station during evening rush hour, caused panic among commuters and residents in the area. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos, with people running for safety as smoke filled the streets. Emergency services and bomb disposal squads rushed to the spot soon after the blast, cordoning off the area and launching an investigation.
The police are working closely with intelligence agencies to determine the source and motive behind the explosion. Preliminary reports suggest that the blast was caused by a high-intensity explosive device, but officials have not yet confirmed whether it was an act of terrorism.
In light of the tragedy, the Delhi Police Commissioner has called an emergency meeting with senior officers to assess the situation and review the city’s security preparedness. Instructions have been issued to step up vigilance at all public gatherings, religious places, and tourist attractions, including India Gate, Connaught Place, and the airport.
Authorities have also appealed to citizens to remain calm, avoid spreading rumors, and immediately report any suspicious objects or activity to the police.
“The safety of the people is our top priority,” another official said. “We are working around the clock to ensure that Delhi remains secure.”
The enhanced security measures will continue across the city until further notice as the investigation into the Red Fort blast progresses.
