Chennai on yellow alert as IMD forecasts more rain
The Met Department forecasts a maximum of 33°C and a minimum of 23°C, indicating warm days and nights.
After days of continuous rainfall, Chennai is set to receive more showers this week, even as Cyclone Ditwah continues to weaken. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city is likely to experience moderate rain on Friday (December 5), accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms. The renewed spell of showers comes at a time when residents were hoping for a break after persistent downpours that had already disrupted daily life in several parts of the city.
The Met Department has also released temperature updates indicating that Chennai will see a maximum temperature of around 33 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is expected to drop to about 23 degrees Celsius. This combination of warm daytime conditions and cooler nights, along with high moisture levels, is likely to contribute to unstable weather patterns over the next few days.
Chennai Weather Tomorrow
The IMD has forecast moderate rain for Thursday as well, with the likelihood of thunderstorms and lightning, particularly in the evening hours. Cloudy skies are expected to dominate most of the day, keeping daytime temperatures relatively subdued. The minimum temperature for Thursday is projected to remain around 23 degrees Celsius, consistent with the pattern observed over recent days.
Chennai Weather Today
Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, has been under a yellow alert for two consecutive days due to the ongoing weather activity. A yellow alert indicates the possibility of heavy rainfall in isolated pockets and urges residents to stay vigilant. Despite the alert, Chennai experienced slightly clearer skies earlier in the morning, offering a brief glimpse of sunshine after almost three days of uninterrupted clouds and rain.
According to the IMD, the depression—now a remnant of Cyclonic Storm Ditwah—was located over the southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining North Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coasts. Moving slowly in a southwestward direction, it weakened further into a well-marked low-pressure area by 0530 hrs IST on December 3, 2025. The system currently lies over North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and nearby regions, causing lingering rainfall over the coastal belt. While the system has lost significant strength, the moisture and instability associated with it continue to fuel thunderstorms across parts of Chennai and its suburbs.
This morning, the city woke up to partly cloudy skies with intermittent sunny intervals. However, IMD’s predictions of moderate rain and thunderstorms throughout the day suggested that residents should be prepared for sudden downpours, brief heavy spells, strong winds, and lightning at times. Commuters were advised to plan accordingly, as waterlogging remains a concern in low-lying areas.
