The remaining two municipal posts were won by candidates belonging to the Bharat Rashtra Samithi party

In the Telangana municipal elections, the Congress has scored an early win. Twelve Congress candidates were elected unanimously, according to figures released by the Telangana State Election Commission. The results were announced ahead of the main polling date.

The remaining two posts went to candidates from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, also known as BRS. Election officials said the process was smooth. They added that no complaints of pressure or unfair methods were reported.

The unopposed wins have drawn attention across the state. Many see this as a boost for the Congress ahead of the full municipal polls scheduled later this month.

District wise data released by the election body shows where these wins came from. In Suryapet district, four Congress candidates were elected without contest. This was the highest number from any single district.

Two Congress candidates each were elected unopposed from municipalities in Vikarabad district and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district. These results point to strong local backing for the party in these areas.

In several other districts, one Congress candidate was elected unanimously. These districts include Jogulamba Gadwal, Khammam, Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar, Medak, and Peddapalli. In each case, no rival filed nomination papers, leading to automatic victories.

Election officials said such outcomes are allowed under the rules when only one valid nomination is filed. They stressed that the process followed all legal steps.

The wider municipal elections in Telangana are scheduled to take place on February 11. A large number of candidates are in the race. According to official data, a total of 12,944 candidates are contesting across the state.

The election commission also shared details about the education levels of the candidates. Around 757 contestants hold postgraduate degrees. A much larger group, about 7,985 candidates, have completed undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate studies.

The data also gives a picture of the varied backgrounds of those contesting. Among the candidates, 4,054 have listed their occupation as housewives. Another 2,532 are involved in business activities.

About 2,816 candidates have mentioned their profession under the category of “others”. This includes people from many walks of life.

There are also 460 candidates who work in the private sector. A smaller number, 87 candidates, are students. Around 56 contestants are retired employees. The list also includes people from several other occupations.

Party wise figures show how crowded the contest is. The Congress has fielded 2,948 candidates in the municipal elections. The BRS is close behind with 2,878 candidates.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has nominated 2,634 candidates across the state. Apart from these major parties, several smaller parties and independent candidates are also in the fray.

Election officials say this mix adds to the competition and keeps local races lively. They also said preparations are on track to ensure peaceful polling on February 11.

For now, the early results have given Congress supporters something to cheer about. Political observers say the real test will come on polling day, when voters across Telangana head to the booths to choose their local leaders.
