Hyderabad Comedian Anudeep Walks Free: Court Slaps Down Shady Arrest in Pawan Kalyan Joke Case

What a relief for stand-up fans—a late-night win in Kakinada! On Thursday, April 16, the III Additional Judicial First Class Magistrate Court set comedian Anudeep Katikala free on a personal bond after cops paraded him before Magistrate B Sridevi at her home around 9:30 p.m. Dragged from Prayagraj that morning, Anudeep dodged remand as the court grilled police on the arrest’s shaky grounds.

Heart-pounding stuff: Anudeep, 30, was nabbed April 14 during a family stroll in Uttar Pradesh while visiting his father. Kakinada’s I Town Police sought custody, citing risks he might flee or reoffend. But the judge wasn’t convinced, questioning how old jokes on Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan justified such a cross-state arrest.

Enter the defence: Human Rights Forum advocates Y. Rajesh and Md. Iqbal tore into the remand report as misleading and legally weak. Police claimed a Section 35(3) BNSS notice had been issued, asking Anudeep to appear within two days. The defence countered that no such notice was ever served, calling the arrest unlawful and without due process.

They also invoked the Supreme Court’s 2025 ruling in Mihir Rajesh Shah v. State of Maharashtra, which mandates that grounds of arrest must be provided in writing and in a language the accused understands. It’s a constitutional safeguard under Article 22(1). In this case, the absence of such documentation weakened the police’s case significantly.

The family’s ordeal adds an emotional layer. Anudeep’s parents rushed to Kakinada amid the chaos. The charges against him include defamation, public mischief, insulting modesty, and obscenity under the IT Act—linked to a viral roast touching on Tollywood figures including Pawan Kalyan and Ram Charan. A complaint was filed by a Jana Sena supporter after the video spread online.

Many see this as overreach. While comedy often pushes boundaries, the use of interstate arrests and serious charges has raised concerns about free speech. Hyderabad’s comedy circuit has rallied behind Anudeep, with peers voicing support and questioning the police’s approach.

The court raised key questions: Were the remarks taken out of context? Was the arrest necessary? The magistrate’s firm stance reflects a broader judicial push to enforce due process, especially after recent Supreme Court guidelines.

A personal bond allowed Anudeep to walk free without immediate financial burden, though the case continues. The episode serves as a reminder that legal safeguards matter—and when overlooked, courts can and do step in.

For Anudeep, it’s freedom for now, but the experience leaves a mark. Still, it’s a moment of relief—for him, his family, and many watching closely.
