Judiciary in Israel

The judiciary in Israel is based on a three-tier system composed of the Supreme Court, district courts, and magistrates’ courts.

  • The Supreme Court is the highest court in the country, it is the final court of appeals for all legal matters. It is composed of a president, deputy president, and 15 justices.
  • The district courts serve as the primary trial courts in Israel and are located in each of the six judicial districts.
  • The magistrates’ courts are the lowest courts and are located in each district. They are limited to civil and criminal matters involving smaller disputes.

The Israeli judicial system is further bolstered by local religious courts, which serve to adjudicate issues of personal status, such as marriage, divorce, and adoption.

Points raised against the reforms

  1. Some of the reforms may reduce the rights of citizens, such as the ability to appeal decisions and the right to a fair trial.
  2. There are concerns that the reforms could be used to interfere with the judicial process, allowing the government to influence decisions.
  3. Many of the reforms have been announced without much public consultation, which could lead to a lack of understanding of the changes.
  4. The government will be attaining much control over appointing judges to all courts other than Supreme Court.

Netanyahu who returned to his position as Prime Minister three months ago have been making changes in the legislation which might weaken the judicial system.

As of now the last protest took place on March 23 and there is a news that Israelis are not gearing up for the “national week of disruption”. The question of the protests and answers of the government is yet to be answered.
