AFGHAN WOMEN BANNED FROM WORKING FOR THE UN – UN REJECTS
The Taliban de facto authorities of Afghanistan informed the United Nations that Afghan women will be banned from working for the UN. That means women in Afghanistan who worked for the UN organizations will no longer be allowed to do so. The UN expressed its inconvenience in accepting what the Taliban are doing.
The UN also demanded that the Taliban take their decision back about the ban of women from working for the UN. The decision is termed “unparallel” and said that it is a violation of women’s rights.
The Taliban have not released any statement about the ban yet nor did they make any public comment about it.
In the statement made by the UN, it was also mentioned that they came to know about the ban, from their organization in Afghanistan when no women came to work.
It was also stated that the UN came to know about women being restricted forcefully which included harassment, intimidation, and detention. This act is also addressed by the UN in the statement they made on Wednesday.
The statement also said that the ban is against international laws and that it cannot be accepted by the UN.
Keeping the violence that might come their way if the employees continued working, in mind, the UN advised all its staff to not report to the office till instructed, this is for those working for the UN in Afghanistan.
This is not the only thing women of Afghan are restricted from, in 2022 they were also restricted from working for NGOs, and national and international nongovernmental organizations.
Since the Taliban took over the rule in Afghanistan, Afghan women’s life has changed a lot. Afghan girls are now not allowed to pursue studies beyond class 6.
Women in Afghanistan are restricted from going to work/study/travel with a male’s permission, and even with permission they cannot go out until and unless they have a male companion to go with them.
No woman is allowed to freely roam out, even to visit a park they’ll have to cover themselves fully from head to toe and be accompanied by a male. And now this is another restriction on the women of Afghan.
The UN in Afghan has a total of 3,900 staff out of which 600 are Afghani women. And the UN’s spokesman Stephane Dujarric couldn’t answer when asked about the Afghani UN’s function if the Taliban doesn’t take the ban reverse.
They also said that they were expecting to have a meeting with the de facto today (Thursday), so the decision has to be looked forward to.
