Canada’s View on India Amid Controversy
In recent developments, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made headlines by affirming Canada’s commitment to strengthening its ties with India, despite what he refers to as “credible allegations” of the Indian government’s role in the assassination of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This declaration comes as a significant moment in the ongoing complex relationship between the two nations.
During a press conference in Montreal, Prime Minister Trudeau emphasized the importance of maintaining active engagement with India, citing its growing global influence. He highlighted India’s status as a rising economic power and a crucial player on the geopolitical stage. Trudeau expressed Canada’s serious intent to forge closer bonds with India, underlining their Indo-Pacific strategy unveiled the previous year.

Jaishankar in Washington, D.C.
Trudeau clarified, “We’ve been in discussions with the Indian government, along with the Americans, stressing how crucial it is for them to join the investigation into the serious accusations that their officials were linked to the murder of a Canadian citizen on Canadian territory.”
Trudeau emphasized that this issue should be taken seriously by all democratic countries that respect the rule of law. He reiterated Canada’s commitment to approaching this matter thoughtfully and responsibly, guided by the principles of the rule of law in its interactions with all its partners, including the Indian government.
Earlier, Trudeau had informed the Canadian House of Commons about the active pursuit of “credible allegations of a potential link” between Indian government agents and the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. He disclosed that he had directly addressed these concerns with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G20 Summit, and India’s top intelligence and security officials were made aware of Canada’s deep concerns.
It’s crucial to note that India vehemently denied these allegations, dismissing them as absurd and motivated. Importantly, Prime Minister Trudeau has not presented any public evidence to substantiate his assertion regarding the killing of Nijjar.
Trudeau’s remarks have further strained the already tense relations between Canada and India. In response to Trudeau’s accusations, India took the extraordinary step of suspending its visa services in Canada. Moreover, India has issued a warning to its citizens visiting Canada, advising them to be extremely careful because of the increasing incidents of anti-India activities, as well as hate crimes and violence endorsed by political figures in the country.
