Celebrating Onam 2023: A Tapestry of Unity and Joy
Amidst the vibrant colours and the sweet scent of flowers, Kerala comes alive during the enchanting festival of Onam. This year, the joyous occasion was kicked off on August 20th and will continue to spread its magic until August 31st. The festival isn’t just a celebration; it’s a reflection of Kerala’s heartwarming values of togetherness and inclusivity. This year’s theme, “Onam, the symphony of harmony,” resonates with this sentiment.
Honouring the spirit of Onam, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the State Tourism’s Onam cultural festival at the Nishagandhi Auditorium in Thiruvananthapuram district. Simultaneously, in Kannur, Kerala Legislative Assembly Speaker A.N Shamseer lit up the ‘Ponnonam 2023’ Onam celebrations at the town square. These events marked the commencement of a 10-day extravaganza filled with cultural performances, folk songs, dances, and the heartwarming embrace of unity.
The legend of Onam weaves together a story of King Mahabali, a just and generous ruler who won over the three worlds. However, his growing popularity raised the Gods’ concerns. To restore the balance, Lord Vishnu incarnated as the Brahmin dwarf Vamana, who approached Mahabali and asked for three steps of land. Mahabali’s humility shone as he agreed, and Vamana covered the heavens and the earth in his three strides. But before leaving, Vamana granted Mahabali’s wish to visit his people once a year. This annual homecoming of Mahabali is celebrated as Onam.
The festival’s journey unfolds across ten days, starting with Atham and progressing through Chodhi, Vishakam, Anizham, Thriketa, Moolam, Pooradam, Uthradam, and finally culminating in Thiruvonam, the grand finale. Thiruvonam is the heart of the celebration, a day of immense significance. Families join together to prepare and relish Onasadya, a lavish feast that symbolizes abundance and community.
A striking visual during Onam is the creation of Pookkalam, intricate floral carpets laid in front of homes and institutions to welcome Mahabali. These vibrant designs are a testament to the artistic and creative spirit of the people.
Beyond the cultural spectacles and delectable feasts, Onam holds a deeper message. Kerala Legislative Assembly Speaker A.N Shamseer, in his speech, emphasized the festival’s role in uniting people against divisive forces. Onam stands as a reminder that irrespective of differences, unity can prevail.
Onam also marks the beginning of the Malayalam calendar and the Malayalam year known as Kolla Varsham. The harvest festival is not just about rituals but about embracing the bond between humans and nature.
Throughout these ten days, schools, universities, offices, and various locations burst with celebrations. From captivating performances to scrumptious meals, every moment is cherished in the spirit of Onam. The festival paints Kerala with a palette of colours that reflect its rich heritage and values.
As we embrace the symphony of harmony that Onam brings, we are reminded of the timeless message it carries – the power of unity, the warmth of inclusivity, and the joy of sharing. In a world that often seems divided, Onam stands as a radiant example of how festivals can bridge gaps and bring hearts closer. So, let the essence of Onam illuminate our lives, as we celebrate this unique tapestry of unity and joy.
