Census 2027 begins as government finalises 33 houselisting questions

Census 2027’s first phase will survey households on housing, family size, amenities, vehicles, and daily cereal consumption.

New Delhi: The government on Thursday officially released the list of 33 questions that will be asked during the first phase of Census 2027, marking the beginning of the houselisting and housing enumeration exercise scheduled to start on April 1. This phase is designed to collect detailed information on households across the country, forming the foundation for the decennial population census.

In a gazette notification issued on Thursday, Registrar General of India, Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan, outlined the questions that enumerators will put to citizens. The questions cover a range of household details, including the materials used in house flooring and roofing, the number of married couples living in the home, and the sex of the head of the household. Additionally, the survey will collect information on daily life, such as the type of cereal consumed, access to basic and modern amenities, and the types of vehicles owned by family members.

Enumerators will also gather data on the use of each house, its current condition, and the number of people who normally reside there. Officials say that this first phase is critical as it sets the groundwork for the next stage of the census, which will focus on collecting demographic, social, and economic information about individuals.

Census officials emphasized that the exercise is not only about counting numbers but also about understanding living conditions, household facilities, and lifestyle patterns across India. The data collected will inform government policies, development plans, and welfare schemes, making the participation of every household essential. Citizens are urged to cooperate fully with enumerators to ensure accurate and comprehensive data collection for the Census of India 2027.
