Udaipur witnessed dramatic scenes on Monday as a dispute within the erstwhile royal family escalated into a violent confrontation following the coronation of BJP MLA Vishvaraj Singh Mewar as the 77th Maharana of Mewar. The conflict, centered around access to the historic city palace, saw tensions between Vishvaraj Singh and his cousin Dr. Lakshay Raj Singh Mewar spiral out of control.
The trouble began after Vishvaraj Singh, who had been formally declared the heir to the Mewar dynasty at a traditional ceremony in Chittorgarh Fort 12 days after his father Mahendra Singh Mewar’s death, sought entry to the city palace.This denial led to a stand-off at the palace gates, which turned violent as the day progressed.
Supporters of Vishvaraj Singh gathered in large numbers at the gates, demanding access to the palace. Post-10 pm, tensions reached a boiling point when stones were hurled from both sides. Visuals from the scene captured the chaotic atmosphere, with stones landing in volleys and police attempting to contain the violence. Supporters outside the palace reportedly tried to storm the gates, while those inside retaliated. Three people sustained injuries during the clashes.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, Vishvaraj Singh himself remained at the scene for five hours, standing with his supporters. The tense standoff drew significant attention, prompting the district administration to step in to prevent further escalation.
