Delhi court grants bail to CM Kejriwal over ED summons.
New Delhi: A magisterial court in the capital city on Saturday granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal amidst complaints filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). These complaints alleged his non-compliance with the agency’s summons in connection with a money laundering case related to the now-defunct excise policy.
After the judge allowed Kejriwal to depart from the court, senior advocate Ramesh Gupta and Additional Solicitor General (ASG) S.V. Raju continued their arguments in the matter.
Gupta, representing CM Kejriwal, presented an application under Section 207 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) for the supply of documents.
ASG Raju expressed that these actions were mere delay tactics and accused the defense of seeking to prolong the proceedings.
ACMM Malhotra subsequently scheduled a hearing on CM Kejriwal’s application for the supply of documents under Section 207 of the CrPC for April 1.
On Friday, a sessions court declined to grant a stay on the summons issued to CM Kejriwal by the ACMM. As he was summoned to appear before her on Saturday, he sought recourse from the sessions court.
The ED had lodged two complaints regarding CM Kejriwal’s non-compliance with their summons. ACMM on Saturday heard both of these complaints.
“Summons are being issued to him to appear on February 17,” the judge had stated at the time.
On January 31, the ED had summoned CM Kejriwal for the fifth time, directing him to appear before it on February 2.
The financial probe agency’s complaint alleged that the CM deliberately avoided complying with the summons, repeatedly providing “lame excuses”.
On February 2, the AAP announced that CM Kejriwal did not appear before the ED for questioning, also criticizing the Central government.
These legal proceedings have drawn significant attention, with both sides vehemently presenting their arguments. The matter is set to continue in the judicial system as both the ED and CM Kejriwal’s defense pursue their respective cases.
The recent events have brought CM Kejriwal into the limelight once again, as he navigates through legal challenges while continuing to serve as the Chief Minister of Delhi. The allegations of non-compliance with ED summons have raised eyebrows and spurred debates across political circles.
As the legal battle unfolds, the intricacies of the case are under scrutiny. The ED, responsible for investigating financial crimes, has accused Kejriwal of deliberately evading summons, indicating a willful disregard for legal processes.
On the other hand, Kejriwal’s defense team, led by senior advocate Ramesh Gupta, has vehemently denied these allegations. They argue that Kejriwal has cooperated with the investigation to the best of his abilities, citing the application under Section 207 of the CrPC for necessary documents.
The courtroom drama has taken center stage in the political arena, with Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) defending its leader against what they label as “political vendetta” and “baseless accusations.”
The legal intricacies are intertwined with the political landscape, creating a complex narrative. Kejriwal’s supporters rally behind him, emphasizing his track record of anti-corruption campaigns and transparency in governance.
However, critics question the timing of these allegations, especially in the context of Delhi’s upcoming elections. The AAP’s popularity and Kejriwal’s image as a clean, efficient administrator could be at stake depending on the outcome of these legal battles.
The ED’s insistence on Kejriwal’s appearance for questioning highlights the seriousness of the allegations. Money laundering cases are sensitive and demand thorough investigation, which the agency claims Kejriwal is obstructing.
While the legal process continues, the public remains divided. Some view Kejriwal as a victim of political targeting, while others emphasize the importance of upholding the law, regardless of one’s position.
As the case progresses, all eyes are on the courtroom developments. The April 1 hearing on the supply of documents will likely shed light on the evidence presented by both sides.
For now, Delhi’s political landscape is abuzz with speculation, analysis, and anticipation of the legal outcome. The fate of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal hangs in the balance as the legal battle unfolds in the corridors of justice.
