Election Commission counters AAP’s allegations before voting.
Ahead of the Delhi Assembly Election 2025, the Election Commission addressed allegations against it, stating that it had observed attempts to “malign it.” In a post on X, the poll body emphasized that it had chosen to exercise “restraint, absorbing such outbursts with sagacity, stoicism.” The statement comes amid tensions with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has been vocal in criticizing the commission’s handling of the electoral process. The Election Commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free and fair elections.
In a post on X, the poll body stated that it had noted such attempts but chose to exercise “restraint, absorbing such outbursts with sagacity, stoicism.” It further asserted that it would “not be swayed by such insinuations.” The EC emphasized that “issues raised” ahead of the Delhi poll were investigated and addressed “by over 1.5 lakh officials, functioning within an established legal framework and robust process to ensure fair play.”
The Election Commission’s statement came in response to comments made by Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal regarding the commission’s independence. Atishi, earlier in the day, accused the EC of failing to act against alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct by the family of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ramesh Bidhuri.
EC’s Response Amid Rising Political Tensions
The post was issued amid growing tensions between the poll body and political parties ahead of the Delhi Assembly Election 2025. The EC has maintained that its primary focus remains on conducting free and fair elections while resisting undue political pressure. The poll body reiterated that “a well-established framework” governs its actions and decisions, ensuring impartiality and transparency.
AAP’s Allegations Against the EC
On Monday, Atishi posted multiple messages on X, alleging that members of Ramesh Bidhuri’s family were seen “roaming” in the Kalkaji constituency, which she represents, in clear violation of the Model Code of Conduct. She further claimed that instead of addressing her complaint, Delhi Police registered a case against her.
“The Election Commission is unbelievable.
Her allegations were directed at both the poll body and law enforcement agencies, accusing them of bias in favor of the BJP.
Bidhuri vs. Atishi: A High-Stakes Contest
Atishi, who has been vocal in her criticism of the BJP’s leadership, is contesting against Ramesh Bidhuri in the Kalkaji constituency. Bidhuri, who has previously faced criticism for making communal remarks against then-Bahujan Samaj Party MP Danish Ali in 2023, has been a controversial figure in Delhi politics. His comments have drawn sharp reactions from opposition leaders, including AAP members.
Last month, Atishi broke down in tears while reacting to personal remarks made by Bidhuri about her father. The AAP strongly condemned his statements, accusing him of using “filthy language” against political opponents. The incident added to the already charged atmosphere between AAP and the BJP.
Model Code of Conduct Violations and Political Accusations
The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is enforced by the Election Commission during elections to ensure fair play and impartiality. Any violations are subject to investigation, and appropriate action is taken. However, political parties often accuse the EC of bias or inaction in specific cases.
In this instance, AAP has raised concerns over the alleged non-action against BJP leaders while simultaneously facing cases themselves. Atishi’s accusations against the EC and Delhi Police indicate the heightened political animosity ahead of the elections.
The Election Commission’s Stand
The EC, however, dismissed these claims, asserting that it has been working tirelessly to maintain fairness in the election process. It pointed out that over 1.5 lakh officials have been deployed to oversee the elections, ensuring adherence to the MCC.
It reiterated its commitment to conducting free and fair elections without being influenced by political narratives.
A Day Before the Polls
As Delhi voters prepare to cast their ballots, the political climate remains tense. The Election Commission’s rebuttal indicates its unwillingness to engage in political controversies, instead focusing on conducting elections smoothly.
The AAP and BJP continue to trade barbs, with allegations and counter-allegations dominating the discourse. The outcome of the Delhi Assembly Election 2025 will determine the political landscape of the national capital and may have wider implications for the parties involved.
With voting set to begin at 8 AM on Wednesday, all eyes are now on the electoral process and the EC’s handling of the situation. The coming days will reveal whether the allegations impact voter sentiment or if the election proceeds without further controversy.
