Hyderabad Police Trace US Murder Suspect Arjun Sharma in Agra
Hyderabad: A man wanted in connection with the alleged murder of a Hyderabad woman in the United States has been traced to Agra, police said on Thursday, August 27, bringing a major development to a case that has remained under investigation since the woman was reported missing earlier this year.
Arjun Sharma, 26, is accused in the murder of Nikitha Godishala, 27, who was living in Ellicott City, Maryland. Hyderabad police traced Sharma to a flat in Agra while investigating a separate cheating case registered following a complaint filed by Nikitha’s father, Anand Godishala.
The investigation began after the family was informed that Nikitha had been found dead in an apartment in Columbia, Maryland. According to Howard County police, she had suffered multiple stab wounds. The apartment belonged to her former roommate, Arjun Sharma, who was subsequently named as a suspect.
US authorities had obtained an arrest warrant against Sharma on first- and second-degree murder charges. Investigators alleged that he killed Nikitha before leaving the United States and travelling to India.
Nikitha had been reported missing on January 2. Her family was officially informed by authorities on January 4 at around 6 am IST that she had sustained multiple stab wounds. Authorities believed that her death occurred at around 7 pm on December 31, 2025.
For her family, the case has been particularly painful because the news came suddenly and thousands of kilometres away from home. Nikitha, the elder daughter of Anand Godishala, had been living in the United States for around four years and had built a professional career there as a Data and Strategy Analyst.
Meanwhile, the Hyderabad police investigation into a separate cheating complaint unexpectedly helped investigators locate Sharma.
The cheating case was registered in April after Nikitha’s father alleged that Sharma had taken money from his daughter and failed to return it. While examining that complaint, Hyderabad police received certain clues that pointed investigators towards Agra.
A police team from Lalaguda Police Station was subsequently sent to Agra. Officers traced Sharma to a flat and caught him there. Police issued him a notice in connection with the cheating case.
However, investigators were already aware that a case had been registered against Sharma in the United States and that a non-bailable warrant (NBW) was pending against him.
“During the investigation, after getting certain clues, a police team was sent to Agra which caught the accused in a flat,” a Hyderabad police official said.
The official added that central authorities were informed because of the pending US case and warrant.
Following his detention, Sharma was produced before the Patiala House Court in New Delhi by central agencies. The court remanded him on August 25 in connection with the murder case, according to the Hyderabad police official.
The development marks an important step in the investigation as Indian and US authorities deal with a case involving an alleged killing in Maryland and a suspect traced to India.
The circumstances surrounding Nikitha’s death, the evidence collected by US investigators and the allegations against Sharma will now be examined through the relevant legal process. The arrest and court proceedings may also help authorities establish a clearer timeline of events surrounding her final days.
For Nikitha’s family, the tracing of the accused could provide an important step towards accountability and answers. However, the case remains subject to judicial proceedings, and the allegations against Sharma have yet to be established through trial.
