EXAM CENTRE IN CHENNAI BANS NEET 2023 ASPIRANTS FROM WEARING BRAS
CONTROVERSY AROSE AFTER A JOURNALIST TWEETED ABOUT GIRLS STUDENTS BEING ASKED TO REMOVE THEIR INNERWEAR BEFORE WRITING EXAM AT A NEET CENTRE IN CHENNAI
Mylapore of Chennai saw a shocking incident that made everyone question the invigilation board of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test 2023. NEET aspirants who went to their examination center in Mylapore were asked to remove their bras before entering the exam hall and were not allowed to write the exam with their undershirts on; the invigilators justified the act in question with a statement “to avoid cheating”.
The incident came to light after a Chennai-based journalist brought up the topic in a tweet of hers. According to the details provided by the journalist in the tweet, it was said that she saw a girl sitting in a corner in an uncomfortable posture at the center. The journalist who approached the girl asked the girl if everything was okay with her.
The journalist was then acknowledged about how the girl and other students were allegedly forced by the invigilators of her center to remove their bras before writing the exam. The devasted journalist offered a shawl to the girl if she’d want to cover herself but the girl whose brother was on the way to pick her up politely refused.
The tweet and the journalist who tweeted it faced a backlash from the netizens who with no mercy abused and trolled the journalist; not only was she verbally abused but was also forced to delete the tweet. But the journalist who decided to not stay silent about the issue and broke it to everyone that more than half girls in the exam hall were seen not wearing a bra.
Several such occurrences have sparked a political uproar in the recent past over examination centers refusing to allow women to wear bras as they take examinations. According to papers, students at Mar Thoma Institute of Information Technology in Kerala were compelled to take off their undershirts prior to taking the exam for security reasons and this happened just last year.
The Education Minister of Tamil Nadu state, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi spoke about the incident and stated that this has been happening for the past few years and also added that the Chief Minister Stalin himself condemned the act. Even today students are asked to remove their hairpins and hairbands while being checked, this was also criticized by Mahesh.
So, despite the act being condemned by the higher authorities it is a question of why it is still being followed. What are your thoughts and why do you think is this happening?
