Chhath Puja 2025: Honouring the Sun God with Faith, Devotion, and Gratitude
New Delhi: Chhath Puja, one of the most sacred and spiritually significant festivals in Hindu culture, is being celebrated across India with deep devotion and joy. The festival, dedicated to the Sun God, Surya, and his sister Chhathi Maiya, is a heartfelt expression of gratitude for the sun’s life-giving energy — the source of health, prosperity, and well-being for all living beings.
Observed with immense reverence in states such as Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal, Chhath Puja stands out for its simplicity, purity, and the intensity of faith it inspires. It is not marked by pomp or extravagance but by discipline, endurance, and devotion — qualities that define the essence of this beautiful tradition.
In 2025, Chhath Puja is being celebrated from October 25 to October 28, with each day holding its own spiritual significance. The four-day observance follows a sequence of rituals that purify the body and soul, bringing devotees closer to nature and divine energy.
Devotees take a holy dip in rivers or ponds, symbolizing purification, and prepare a simple, satvik (pure) meal. This meal, cooked without onion or garlic, is shared with family members as a sacred start to the observance.
The second day, called Kharna, is a day of rigorous fasting. Devotees abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset and later break their fast after offering prayers to the setting sun. The meal usually consists of gur (jaggery) kheer, chapati, and fruits — all prepared with devotion and purity.
The third day, Sandhya Arghya, is the main day of the festival. Devotees, dressed in traditional attire, gather at riverbanks, ponds, or other water bodies to offer ‘arghya’ (offerings) to the setting sun. As the golden hues of dusk spread across the sky, the sight of countless devotees standing in water with folded hands, singing Chhath songs, creates an atmosphere of divine serenity and unity. It is believed that offering prayers to the setting sun helps remove obstacles and brings peace and prosperity to one’s life.
The final day, Usha Arghya, marks the conclusion of Chhath Puja. Devotees offer prayers to the rising sun, thanking Surya Dev for his blessings and seeking his continued grace. This ritual symbolizes hope, renewal, and the eternal cycle of life. After the prayers, devotees break their long fasts and share the prasad with family and friends.
In 2025, the Sandhya Arghya will be observed on Monday, October 27, and the Usha Arghya on Tuesday, October 28.
Chhath Puja is not just a festival — it is a celebration of nature’s rhythm, gratitude, and human endurance. It reminds us of the delicate balance between life and the environment and how faith can connect humanity to the divine forces that sustain existence.
As the first rays of the sun touch the waters this Chhath Puja, millions will bow in reverence, their hearts filled with thankfulness and prayers for health, happiness, and harmony.
