SUDAN UNDER THE WRATH OF WAR BETWEEN THE THEN ALLIES – A WAR OVER POWER
Sudan – a country in North America was observed to pop up a lot in the news headlines in the past few days. What is happening in Sudan, why are Indians in Sudan warned to stay home? Here is a brief about what is happening in Sudan.
The country of Sudan is seeing a fight or more like a massacre. Sudan was successfully taken under control in 2021 by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese army, during which the two groups worked together to make it work. In that military coup, the Sudanese Military was led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and he led the whole army toward victory over the Sudanese government.
Now in 2023, the main clash arose over ‘who will be the head of the parliament. Military or RSF?’ military General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF leader, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, who once were friends, turned into enemies after it was proposed to merge the two allies, and the clash over the power arose.
The question of “Who will be the in-charge of the two forces if combined” was always there but it intensified when Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo aka Hemedti was promoted into a position equal to Fattah al-Burhan. Hemedti who used to be the deputy of al-Burhan turned into a rebel after being given a promotion. The RSF and Sudanese Military that once became one to achieve control over Sudan are now again divided to achieve control over themselves.
The question between the two forces led to violent clashes that led to a brutal massacre. It’s been 5 days are there is no sign of them being cooled down. It was on 15 April 2023 that the war broke out in places across the African country; Khartoum, the capital faced the severe wrath of the war when compared to other places.
The cities in Sudan are currently prone to air raids, shelling, and firing due to the clashes being intensified. The brutal war killed more than 100s as of now and more than 1800s are injured in this violent war. The ongoing conflict also led to the World Food Programme dropping its operations in the country after a war in Darfur killed three of its employees.
War-torn Sudan is now declared unsafe for other nationals living there after the war led to injuring an Indian in an open fire. A high alert was issued to all foreign nationals in the country after the issue of RSF members assaulting a European Union ambassador came out. The Indian embassy in Sudan requested all the Indians in Sudan to stay home and not come out to avoid the risk during the time of clashes.
United Nations secretary general, head of the African Union Commission, head of the Arab League, and other diplomats urged the two forces to stop fighting amid the deaths due to the war.
The damages a war can bring are unpredictably dangerous. Sudan is now facing the wrath of greed for power. it might take time for the issue to settle down and till then all we can do is pray for things to get better.
