TAKING YOU BACK INTO THE HISTORY NEWS OF APRIL 18
Every day every minute, in the past a history was created. Name a day and there is something significant about it, maybe not this year but at some point, in history – it was special. Today is the 18th of February and many great events happened in the past. Let me make you back into some of those rememberable times –
1955 – the death of the greatest scientists of all time
The synonym of ‘genius’ is ‘Einstein’, the one person that comes into our mind when we speak about science and scientists is him. The greatest scientist of all time, left the world today in 1955. On 17 April 1955, Einstein was admitted to the hospital due to internal bleeding caused by a rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. He was suggested an operation but denied it saying “I want to go when I want”. And just like that, he left.
1899 – Queen Victoria gifted her own royal charter to an ambulance association
This happened on 18 April 1899, during the period of Queen Victoria. The royal highness, herself came forward and gave her royal charter to the St. Andrew’s Ambulance Association. This is Scotland’s first association to provide ambulance service and was founded in 1882.
1909 – beatification of the Joan of Arc
On this day in 1909, Joan of Arc was given peace and was recognized to have entered heaven; this is a catholic procedure done after one’s death. Joan of Arc – the French National Heroine, was an active member of French history. During the Hundred Years’ War, Joan guided the French army to a vital victory at Orléans in 1429 and thwarted an English effort to capture France.
1897 – declaration of war between Greece and the Ottoman Empire
The Greco-Turkish War of 1897 was a 30-day war between the Kingdom of Greece and the Ottoman Empire. The war is termed an ‘Unfortunate War’ by the Greeks. The Ottoman Empire took down the opposition on the field.
1963 – Conan O’Brien’s birth
Conan O’Brien, the American talk show host famous for his ‘late night talk shows’, was born on this day in 1963. Conan was born in Massachusetts’s Brookline to the couple Thomas Francis O’Brien and Ruth O’Brien. And today he is a comedian, writer, host, and producer.
1956 – the birth of Golden Globe winner, Eric Roberts
America’s actor Eric Roberts was born on this day in 1956. Eric was born to two actors – Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts. Eric’s birth took place in Biloxi, Mississippi. Eric who is the brother of Julia Roberts was seen in King of the Gypsies and also won a Golden Globe Award.
When they say ‘every day is special’ maybe this is what they mean. You look back to the days you know but there are many specials you don’t know; these I mentioned above are just a few and there are many other things that we have to know about our history.
