Hyderabad: Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad has issued a passenger advisory following the cancellation of several flights due to a volcanic ash plume drifting toward northern India from Ethiopia. The unusual weather phenomenon has affected aviation operations across the country, prompting heightened safety measures and urgent guidance from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
The volcanic ash, originating from Ethiopia, has moved over parts of northern and western India, causing disruptions in both domestic and international air traffic. Across India, numerous flights were either cancelled or diverted to avoid the ash cloud, with international carriers also experiencing operational impacts. Recognising the potential risk to aircraft engines and passenger safety, the DGCA issued an urgent advisory to all airlines and airports, stressing adherence to safety protocols and constant monitoring of flight paths.
Hyderabad airport was directly affected on Tuesday, with at least five flights cancelled due to the suspected movement of volcanic ash toward western India. Among the affected flights were Air India services AI 2204 (Dubai-Hyderabad), AI 2466 (Hyderabad-Delhi), AI 2444/2445 (Mumbai-Hyderabad-Mumbai), and IndiGo’s Doha-Hyderabad flight 6E 1316. The cancellations disrupted travel plans for passengers, many of whom had to adjust schedules or make alternate arrangements at short notice.
In response, RGIA issued a detailed passenger advisory urging travellers to check the latest flight status with their respective airlines before heading to the airport.
