IMD issues Red Alert for Mumbai, Kerala
Mumbai experienced a shift in weather conditions on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, as light showers graced several parts of the city, bringing a pleasant and cooler atmosphere. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the city is expected to witness a generally cloudy sky with continued spells of heavy rainfall. The change in weather follows Monday’s intense showers, which marked the official onset of the monsoon season in the region.
The sudden and heavy downpour caused waterlogging in multiple low-lying areas, severely impacting vehicular movement and delaying local train services during peak hours. Despite the inconvenience, residents welcomed the monsoon showers after the intense summer heat.
Meanwhile, the southern states of Kerala and Karnataka continued to struggle under the weight of heavy rainfall. On Monday, relentless downpours led to widespread disruption of daily life, particularly in Kerala’s central and northern districts. Several regions witnessed flooding, forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate their homes and relocate to relief camps set up by the state authorities.
The victims were mostly affected by landslides, flash floods, and accidents caused by poor visibility and slippery roads. Authorities have issued advisories urging people to stay indoors and avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary. Emergency services are on high alert, and efforts are underway to deliver food, water, and medical aid to those affected.
The IMD has issued a red alert for coastal Karnataka, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next five days. The alert covers areas including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts, where flood-prone zones are being monitored round the clock. The district administration in Hassan, Karnataka, has already reported significant rainfall that has caused localized flooding and damage to crops and infrastructure.
Schools and colleges in several districts have been ordered to remain closed as a precautionary measure. Local authorities are also coordinating with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state disaster response units to ensure timely evacuation and emergency relief in the most affected areas.
In Himachal Pradesh, weather officials have also warned of deteriorating conditions starting May 27. The local meteorological office has forecast rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and even hailstorms in multiple districts. An orange alert has been issued for Shimla, Kullu, and Mandi districts on May 27 and 28. Additionally, Kangra, Solan, and Sirmaur districts are expected to experience thunderstorms and hail on May 27.
Residents in the hilly state are being advised to stay alert, especially in landslide-prone and high-altitude regions. Farmers have also been cautioned against exposure to open fields during thunderstorms and hail.
As the monsoon begins its annual journey across the country, several regions are preparing for the challenges it brings. While the rains are vital for agriculture and water supply, they also come with significant risks to life and infrastructure. Authorities across affected states are urging people to heed weather warnings and cooperate with emergency protocols to ensure safety during this critical period.
