Mumbai: A family from Maharashtra is making a desperate appeal to the Indian government, seeking urgent intervention for a US visa after their 35-year-old daughter, Nilam Shinde, was left in a coma following a horrific accident in California on February 14.
Nilam, a Master of Science student in her final year, suffered multiple fractures and severe injuries to her head and chest after being struck by a four-wheeler. She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors immediately sought permission from her family to perform brain surgery. However, her father, Tanaji Shinde, has been unable to travel to the US due to delays in securing a visa, adding to the family’s distress.
A Father’s Struggle
The nightmare began when the Shinde family received the devastating news of Nilam’s accident on February 16—two days after it had occurred. Since then, Tanaji has been desperately trying to obtain a visa, but bureaucratic hurdles have made the process agonizingly slow.
But we haven’t got it yet,” he told NDTV, his voice filled with frustration and helplessness.
For a father whose daughter is lying in a coma thousands of miles away, the visa delay feels like an endless ordeal. Every passing hour adds to his anxiety, knowing that Nilam is battling for her life in a foreign land without her family by her side.
Political Support and Diplomatic Efforts
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) MP Supriya Sule has stepped in to support the family. She has urged External Affairs Minister Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), she tagged the minister, calling for immediate action.
Despite political differences with the Centre, Sule acknowledged Jaishankar’s responsiveness and praised the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for its consistent support for Indians abroad.
The Family’s Desperate Wait
Nilam’s uncle, Sanjay Kadam, recounted how the family first learned about the accident. It was her roommates who informed them, after the police admitted her to the hospital.
The Shinde family has been in constant touch with the hospital, which provides daily updates on Nilam’s condition. However, their frustration has only grown as they struggle to secure a visa appointment.
For a family already reeling from shock, the bureaucratic red tape has only deepened their distress. The fact that they might have to wait months to be with Nilam is an agonizing thought.
“The hospital administration sought our permission for brain surgery. She is in a coma right now, and we need to be there,” Kadam added, his voice trembling with emotion.
