Lucknow: The 95-year-old mother of an Indian Police Service officer was found dead inside her home in Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkarnagar district. The woman, identified as Indravati, lived alone in Rudha Dhamrua village, where the incident has raised concerns about the safety of elderly people living by themselves.
Her body was found on a cot inside the house by a domestic worker at around 9 a.m. on Sunday.
After receiving the information, Mishra travelled to the village and reached the house at approximately 3 p.m. He later lodged a complaint alleging murder and robbery against unidentified persons. According to the family, a gold chain, nose pin, earrings, and anklets that Indravati had been wearing were missing.
The family suspects that thieves may have entered the house on Saturday night. They believe the elderly woman may have been killed before the ornaments were taken. However, the police have not yet confirmed whether the death was caused by murder, robbery, or another reason. The final cause will depend on the post-mortem report and the wider investigation.
Police version
The police said the matter initially came to their attention as a possible case of natural death. According to the official statement, a person identified as Ramesh Chandra Mishra informed Malipur Police Station at around 1:13 p.m. that Indravati had died of a heart attack at approximately 8 a.m.
Later, at around 2:30 p.m., Ashutosh Mishra informed the police that he suspected his mother had been murdered and that the jewellery she had been wearing was missing from her body. Based on his complaint, the police began investigating the case as a suspected murder and robbery.
A forensic team and senior officials inspected the house and completed the panchnama process. The police said that no visible injuries or signs of a struggle were found on the body during the initial inspection. This has made the post-mortem examination particularly important in determining what happened.
The body was sent for examination by a panel of three doctors. The post-mortem was conducted with videography, and samples were reportedly preserved for further testing. Investigators are also expected to examine the house, question neighbours and domestic workers, check possible entry points, and look for evidence that could identify anyone who visited the property.
Questions surrounding the death
The case has caused distress because Indravati was elderly and lived alone. Families of senior citizens in villages often worry about security, particularly when relatives work in distant cities and cannot remain at home throughout the day.
The missing jewellery has strengthened the family’s suspicion of robbery, but investigators must establish whether the ornaments disappeared before or after the death. They will also need to determine whether there were signs of forced entry, whether anyone knew that the woman lived alone, and whether the house had been watched before the incident.
The absence of visible injuries does not by itself settle the matter. A medical examination may reveal information that cannot be established through an external inspection. Police officials have therefore urged caution until the report is completed.
Political reaction
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav criticised the Uttar Pradesh government following the incident. He wrote on social media that the murder of an IPS officer’s mother was deeply troubling and said the incident suggested that even police families were not safe in the state.
The remark has brought the issue of law and order into the political debate. The police, meanwhile, are investigating the allegations and have not publicly confirmed the identity of any suspect. The family continues to await clear answers about how Indravati died and where her jewellery went.
