Iran Launches Missiles Across Region After US Strikes on IRGC Targets
Tehran: Iran launched missiles towards targets across the region in the early hours of Monday, August 31, in retaliation for US strikes on two Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) missile launchers on Larak Island.
The strikes marked the first known US attack on Iranian targets since late July and triggered a fresh escalation across an already tense region. Air-defence activity was reported in Jordan, while emergency alerts were also reported in Dubai, Qatar and Kuwait.
Iranian state television said missiles had been launched from several locations across the country. Iranian media reported activity from different parts of Iran, although some of the reports circulating online could not be independently verified.
Unverified reports mentioned missile activity from areas including Tehran, Karaj, East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan, Urmia, Zanjan, Shiraz, Lorestan and Khorramabad.
The latest escalation comes as tensions surrounding the strategically important Strait of Hormuz continue to rise, raising concerns about wider regional security and the potential impact on shipping and energy supplies.
IRGC claims attacks on US bases
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had carried out a combined ballistic missile and drone operation against US military positions in the region.
The IRGC named the King Hussein and Al-Azraq air bases in Jordan among the targets. It claimed that the operation struck technical and maintenance infrastructure as well as positions associated with fighter aircraft.
Separate reports indicated that Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, a major US military facility, was also targeted.
Iran described the operation as “Punishment of the Aggressor” and warned that any further attacks could result in an even stronger response.

Jordan says eight missiles intercepted
Jordan’s armed forces said its air-defence systems intercepted eight missiles that entered Jordanian airspace.
According to the military, the missiles were destroyed before they could pose a threat. Videos shared online appeared to show interceptor launches and explosions in the night sky over Jordan, although the precise circumstances surrounding the footage could not immediately be independently verified.
Reports also claimed that explosions occurred near the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, which hosts US forces. However, there was no independent confirmation that the base itself suffered a direct hit.

Alerts were also reported in Qatar and Kuwait. Authorities and residents remained on watch as the possibility of further missile activity raised concerns across the Gulf.

Cruise missiles reportedly target US vessels
Separate reports also claimed that cruise missiles were launched from southern Iran towards US naval vessels operating in the Gulf of Oman.
