New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal has strongly defended former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain following his arrest in an alleged Delhi Jal Board tender corruption case. Kejriwal claimed that the arrest was carried out at the behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party and predicted that the case would eventually be proved false.
Jain was arrested on Tuesday by the Delhi Anti-Corruption Branch in connection with an FIR registered in 2024. The case relates to alleged irregularities in the tendering process for the augmentation and upgradation of sewage treatment plants under the Delhi Jal Board.
Reacting to the arrest, Kejriwal said the previous case against Jain had been fabricated and that the latest case would also be exposed as false. He accused the BJP-led government of using investigative agencies to target political opponents.
In a social media post, Kejriwal questioned how long what he described as “dictatorship” would continue. He said people were being sent to jail on false charges and asked who would compensate them for the time spent in custody and the mental pressure faced by their families.
Kejriwal also said that the entire Aam Aadmi Party and people across the country stood firmly with Jain. He claimed that the BJP’s alleged political excesses had reached a point where public support for the ruling party would eventually decline.
Details of the case
The Delhi government’s Directorate of Vigilance filed a complaint alleging large-scale irregularities, manipulation of tender conditions, and criminal conspiracy in contracts connected with sewage treatment plant projects.
The Anti-Corruption Branch arrested six people in the case. Besides Satyendar Jain, the accused include former Delhi Jal Board chief executive officer Udit Prakash Rai, former contractual consultant Ankit Srivastava, and private individuals Nagendra Yadav, Raja Kumar Kurra, and Pankaj Verma.
According to the allegations, tender conditions may have been designed or altered in a way that favoured a particular private company. Investigators are examining whether public officials and private individuals worked together to restrict competition and provide an improper advantage to a selected bidder.
It also invokes sections of the Indian Penal Code relating to cheating, criminal breach of trust, inducement, and criminal conspiracy.
Arrest does not establish guilt, and the accused will have the opportunity to respond to the charges through the legal process.
Political confrontation
The arrest has added to the continuing political confrontation between the AAP and the BJP. AAP leaders have repeatedly accused central and state investigative agencies of targeting opposition figures, while the BJP has maintained that corruption cases should be investigated regardless of the political identity of those involved.
For Jain, the arrest is another difficult moment after his earlier legal troubles. Kejriwal referred to the former minister’s previous detention and said he had already endured imprisonment and mental torture in a case that he described as fabricated.
The latest investigation will now focus on documents related to the tenders, communications between officials and bidders, technical specifications, financial transactions, and the decision-making process within the Delhi Jal Board.
Sewage treatment projects are closely connected to public health and the environment. Delhi’s residents depend on such infrastructure to manage wastewater and reduce pollution. Any corruption in the tendering process could therefore affect not only public finances but also the quality and timely completion of essential civic works.
The case will be closely watched as investigators present their evidence and the courts examine the allegations. For the AAP, Jain’s arrest has become another example of what it calls political targeting. For the investigating agency, the challenge will be to establish its claims through verifiable evidence.
