“Lok Sabha Accepts No-Confidence Motion”
In a significant development in the Lok Sabha, Speaker Om Birla has acknowledged the no-confidence motion moved by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on behalf of the opposition parties of the I.N.D.I.A alliance. Following the motion, the Speaker inquired about the number of members supporting it and subsequently accepted the motion. However, he stated that the time for the debate on the motion would be scheduled later.
As a result of this acceptance, the House resumed its normal functioning, and opposition members utilized the opportunity to express their opinions on the bills being introduced by the government. It’s worth mentioning that the monsoon session of Parliament, which began on July 20, has witnessed repeated adjournments, making this motion a significant event.
Gaurav Gogoi, representing the Kaliabor constituency in Assam, hails from the northeast region and holds the responsibility of moving the no-confidence motion. Adding to this, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, with its nine members in the Lok Sabha, also submitted a no-confidence motion notice against the government.
In response to the no-confidence motion, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal asserted that the government is prepared to face any situation. He highlighted that they are willing to discuss the issue of Manipur, which the opposition has raised, but accused them of constantly changing their demands and using various excuses to delay the process.
Gaurav Gogoi had submitted the notice for the no-confidence motion earlier in the day, a decision that was taken at a meeting of the opposition I.N.D.I.A alliance party on Tuesday. The alliance comprises 26 opposition parties who have joined forces to bring this motion against the government.
Though the opposition MPs are aware that the government has the numbers in their favor, they see the no-confidence motion as a means to demand answers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on various pressing issues, including the recent violence in Manipur.
CPI MP Binoy Viswam, emphasizing the political nature of the motion, believes that it will compel the Prime Minister to address the Parliament. The opposition is eager to have discussions on critical national issues, particularly those related to Manipur. Despite the odds stacked against them in terms of numbers, the opposition is determined to utilize this opportunity to raise their concerns and hold the government accountable.
Congress Whip in Lok Sabha, Manickam Tagore, stressed the unity of the I.N.D.I.A alliance, with the idea of the no-confidence motion originating from their discussions. He mentioned that their primary aim is to challenge what they perceive as the Prime Minister’s arrogance in avoiding Parliament and neglecting to address the concerns about Manipur. The motion is seen as a last resort for the opposition to make the government respond to these pressing matters.
Additionally, AAP MP Raghav Chadha highlighted that some parliamentary procedures, including this no-confidence motion, serve to facilitate extended discussions and prompt the government to provide answers.
In conclusion, the acceptance of the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha has set the stage for a crucial debate on various issues raised by the opposition. While they may not have the numbers on their side, the motion is seen as a tool to demand accountability from the government and to bring pressing matters into the spotlight. The nation now waits to witness the outcome of this significant parliamentary event.
