Massive Fire Engulfs Mumbai’s JMS Business Centre, Rescue Operations Underway

Mumbai: A massive fire broke out on Thursday morning in a 13-storey commercial building in Jogeshwari, a western suburb of Mumbai, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky and alarming nearby residents. Officials reported that the blaze erupted at JNS Business Center, located near Gandhi School, around 10:50 am, though, fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far.

The fire has been confined to the 9th to 12th floors of the glass-facade building. Flames were seen crawling along the building’s glass panels, while dense black smoke engulfed the upper floors, creating a dramatic and dangerous scene visible from surrounding streets. The sight prompted many office workers and locals to rush to the area, worried about the safety of people inside the high-rise.

Fire officials said that the rescue operation is currently underway, with teams working to evacuate individuals stranded on the higher floors. “The operation to rescue the stranded persons is being carried out by firemen equipped with breathing apparatus (BA) sets,” said a senior fire official at the scene. The teams are navigating the smoke-filled corridors, ensuring that everyone is safely brought down to ground level.

A fire brigade spokesperson confirmed that at least 12 fire engines, along with other specialized firefighting equipment, have been deployed to tackle the blaze. “Various agencies have been mobilized, and all possible resources are being used to control the fire,” the official said. Firefighters are working tirelessly, battling both the flames and the heat radiating from the upper floors, while attempting to prevent the fire from spreading to lower levels or neighboring buildings.

The building’s glass facade has made the firefighting operation particularly challenging. Flames climbing the glass panels can create a cascading effect, as heat reflects across the surface, intensifying the fire’s reach. Thick smoke has made visibility difficult inside the building, forcing fire personnel to rely heavily on breathing apparatus and thermal imaging to locate and evacuate those trapped.

Residents and office employees in the surrounding area have been asked to stay away from the site for their own safety. Roads around the building have been cordoned off, and emergency services are working to maintain order while allowing the fire brigade unhindered access. Witnesses reported seeing office workers and staff on higher floors waving from windows, signaling for help as smoke filled the corridors.

As of now, authorities are yet to confirm the cause of the fire. Investigations are expected to begin once the blaze is fully controlled, with officials seeking to determine whether it was caused by an electrical short circuit, a technical malfunction, or any other factor. Meanwhile, fire officials are focusing on containing the fire and ensuring the safety of all personnel.

The incident has highlighted the importance of emergency preparedness in high-rise buildings, including the presence of fire alarms, sprinklers, and well-trained staff to manage evacuations. Residents and office employees in nearby buildings have been advised to remain vigilant and follow instructions from authorities.

Firefighters continue to battle the blaze, with the priority remaining the safe evacuation of everyone inside. As the rescue and firefighting operation continues, the city watches anxiously, hoping for the flames to be brought under control without any casualties.
