New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in New Delhi on Friday, September 11, on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. The two leaders discussed the evolving situation in West Asia and explored ways to strengthen the long-standing relationship between India and Iran.
The meeting came at a time when tensions in West Asia have raised concerns about regional stability, international trade, energy supplies and the safety of commercial shipping. Modi described Pezeshkian’s first visit to India as a special occasion and said the two countries should continue building their friendship through a long-term and mutually beneficial strategy.
“We believe that we should move forward with a long-term and win-win strategy,” the Prime Minister said.
The leaders also discussed the prevailing situation in the region. Modi reiterated India’s commitment to working towards lasting peace and stability in West Asia, while stressing that regional problems should be addressed through dialogue and diplomatic engagement.
The meeting was significant because it was the second interaction between Modi and Pezeshkian in less than two weeks. The two leaders had earlier met on August 31 on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek.
Pezeshkian arrived in New Delhi on Friday to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accompanied the Iranian president during his visit.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the two leaders reviewed different aspects of India-Iran bilateral relations and exchanged views on recent developments in West Asia.
