Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said India has the potential to emerge as a global leader in the space sector, urging private space companies to create an ecosystem capable of attracting international talent, investment and innovation. During an interaction with CEOs and founders of 20 private space firms, Modi highlighted India’s growing capabilities, cost competitiveness and large pool of skilled professionals, while calling for greater private-sector participation to expand the country’s role in the global space economy.

Modi said India should aim to create an environment so attractive that people from around the world want to build their careers and businesses in the country. “We must create such an aura that people all over the world feel that if they want to build their life, they should come to Hindustan,” he said, encouraging entrepreneurs to think beyond domestic opportunities and build globally competitive companies from India.

The interaction took place on Friday, with details released on Sunday, August 23, which is observed as National Space Day in India. The day commemorates the successful Chandrayaan-3 mission, which achieved a safe and soft landing of the Vikram Lander on the lunar surface in 2023.

Modi used the occasion to underline the growing importance of private companies in India’s space ambitions. He encouraged entrepreneurs to expand their focus beyond rockets and satellites and explore applications that can directly improve the lives of ordinary citizens. Agriculture, climate monitoring, disaster management and other areas, he said, could benefit significantly from wider use of space-based technologies.

Private space sector expands rapidly

India’s space industry has undergone a major transformation since the government opened the sector to private participation in 2020. The move allowed startups and private companies to participate in areas that had traditionally been dominated by government institutions, including satellite manufacturing, launch systems and space-based applications.

The expansion has been rapid. According to a government release issued on August 14, the number of registered private space startups in India has increased from just one in 2014 to around 440 in 2026. The growth reflects rising investor interest, technological advances and increasing confidence in India’s ability to develop commercially viable space businesses.

The Indian Space Policy 2023 further widened opportunities for non-government entities across the space value chain. Private companies can now develop and operate satellites, provide launch services and build applications based on space-derived data. This policy framework has helped create a more structured environment for entrepreneurs seeking to enter the sector.

The government’s approach represents a shift from viewing space primarily as a strategic and scientific domain toward developing it as a major commercial industry. The objective is not simply to increase the number of Indian space companies but to build businesses capable of competing internationally.

Startups working across advanced technologies

The companies represented at Modi’s interaction demonstrate the diversity of India’s emerging private space ecosystem. Startups including Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, Pixxel, Dhruva Space, GalaxEye, PierSight, Bellatrix Aerospace and Digantara are working across several specialised areas.

Their work includes rocket development, satellite systems, reusable launch vehicles, advanced propulsion, Earth observation, space debris removal and artificial intelligence-powered weather intelligence. Such activity indicates that India’s private space sector is moving beyond the early stages of experimentation and developing capabilities across multiple parts of the global space supply chain.

Cumulative investment in Indian space startups has reached approximately USD 618.5 million. Industry expectations suggest that overseas customers and international markets could become increasingly important sources of revenue as Indian companies demonstrate their technologies and expand their commercial operations.

The growing investment also reflects a broader change in investor perception. Space companies were once viewed largely as long-term and high-risk ventures requiring substantial government support. The emergence of successful startups and advances in launch and satellite technologies have created new opportunities for private capital.

From building capabilities to scaling businesses

Earlier efforts focused heavily on developing technologies and proving that private companies could successfully operate in areas traditionally handled by government agencies. The next challenge is to scale those technologies into sustainable businesses.

This means developing reliable products, attracting international customers and integrating space-based services into industries outside the traditional aerospace sector. Earth observation, satellite communications, navigation, weather forecasting and climate intelligence could become increasingly important to agriculture, logistics, infrastructure, insurance and disaster response.

Modi’s call for wider applications of space technology reflects this broader vision. The Prime Minister has stressed that space achievements should not remain limited to scientific missions or national prestige. Instead, the technologies developed through India’s space programme should contribute directly to economic growth and improve everyday life.

Agriculture could benefit from satellite-based monitoring of crops, soil conditions and water resources. Climate monitoring could help governments and businesses understand environmental changes, while space-based systems could provide crucial information during floods, cyclones, fires and other disasters.

Human talent will be crucial

Alongside investment and infrastructure, Modi placed significant emphasis on human capital. India’s large pool of engineers, scientists and technology professionals is one of its biggest advantages in the global space race. However, attracting international talent and retaining skilled Indian professionals will be essential if the country wants to build companies capable of competing with established global players.

The success of Chandrayaan-3 demonstrated the country’s ability to achieve major technological milestones efficiently, while private companies are attempting to build commercial models around launch services, satellites and space-based data.

The long-term ambition is therefore much larger than becoming a launch destination. India is seeking to establish itself as a full-spectrum space economy with capabilities extending from research and manufacturing to launches, satellite services, Earth observation and downstream applications.

If the country can combine ISRO’s experience with the speed and innovation of startups, attract global capital and talent, and expand the use of space technology across the wider economy, India could significantly increase its share of the rapidly expanding global space market.

Modi’s message to private space entrepreneurs reflects that ambition: India should not merely participate in the global space race but build an ecosystem capable of competing, innovating and leading on the world stage.
