New Delhi: On the eve of India’s 80th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu delivered a wide-ranging address that connected the country’s freedom struggle with its hopes for the future. The speech focused on national unity, student welfare, youth employment, entrepreneurship, sports, environmental responsibility, and India’s ambition to become a developed nation by 2047.
In a first, the full version of “Vande Mataram” was played before and after the President’s address on Friday, August 14. The national song was followed by the National Anthem, creating a solemn and deeply patriotic atmosphere.
President Murmu underlined the importance of “Vande Mataram” during India’s freedom movement. She said that people with different ideologies and backgrounds had been united by one common goal—the country’s independence. During the Swadeshi Movement, the song became a popular expression of patriotism and was embraced by ordinary citizens across the country.
Paying tribute to the leaders of the freedom struggle, the President said she bowed humbly to the great sons and daughters of Bharat Mata whose ideals guided India towards freedom and continued progress. Her words also served as a reminder that independence was achieved through the combined efforts of countless people, many of whose names are not recorded in history books.
A nation built by its people
Quoting Telugu writer Gurajada Apparao, President Murmu said that a nation is not merely its land but all its people. The message gave a human dimension to her vision of a developed India. Development, she suggested, cannot be measured only through roads, industries, technology, or economic growth. It must also be reflected in the dignity, opportunities, safety, and well-being of citizens.
She called on people to take an active role in nation-building. This includes supporting education, respecting diversity, protecting the environment, encouraging innovation, and helping create a society where every citizen has the opportunity to progress.
Students, examinations, and jobs
Referring to concerns over examination paper leaks and unfair practices, she said the government was taking comprehensive steps to reform public examinations.
The aim, she said, was to make examinations more transparent, secure, and trustworthy. This issue has become especially important for young people who spend years preparing for competitive examinations. For many families, a public examination represents more than a test—it can determine access to higher education, employment, and financial stability.
President Murmu said society must work together to protect the present and future security of students. Fair examinations, reliable systems, and timely action against malpractice are essential to restore confidence among young people.
She also praised the growing spirit of entrepreneurship among India’s youth. Increasing numbers of young Indians, she said, are choosing self-employment and job creation instead of waiting only for traditional employment. This trend has contributed to the growth of India’s start-up ecosystem and attracted global companies that value the talent and dedication of Indian professionals.
Sports and well-being
The President stressed that physical and mental well-being are central to the country’s future. Families, schools, communities, and institutions all have a responsibility to encourage young people and support their ambitions.
She highlighted the Khelo India programme, under which a sports ecosystem is being developed from the grassroots level to national competitions. Greater investment in sports infrastructure and training, she said, was already contributing to improved performances by Indian athletes in international events.
National security
President Murmu also praised the Indian Armed Forces for their “unmatched valour”. Referring to Operation Sindoor, she said the operation demonstrated India’s ability to conduct precision counter-terror operations and sent a clear message that terrorists and their supporters would face consequences.
She also recalled Kargil Vijay Diwas and the anniversary of Operation Sindoor, honouring the soldiers who protect the country. Her remarks combined remembrance with a strong message of national security and determination.
