First Session of Newly Constituted Delhi Assembly Begins
New Delhi: The first session of the newly constituted Delhi Assembly commenced on Monday, marking the beginning of a new legislative term. The session witnessed the swearing-in of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and her Cabinet ministers, along with other elected MLAs.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who recently led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a significant victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, took her oath as an MLA in the House. She was accompanied by her six Cabinet ministers, who also took their oaths of office. This event signaled the official commencement of governance under the new administration.
Among the newly elected MLAs, BJP’s Kapil Mishra took his oath in Sanskrit, reflecting a deep cultural reverence for the ancient language. Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Sanjeev Jha chose to take his oath in Maithili, a language spoken widely in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, showcasing linguistic diversity. Meanwhile, BJP’s Manjinder Singh Sirsa took his oath in Punjabi, symbolizing the representation of the Sikh community in the Assembly.
Prior to the commencement of the session, BJP MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely was sworn in as the pro-tem Speaker. He took his oath at the Raj Niwas, administered by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. As the pro-tem Speaker, Lovely’s primary responsibility was to oversee the initial proceedings, including the swearing-in of the newly elected MLAs and the election of a full-time Speaker.
Rekha Gupta was the first to take the oath as an MLA, followed by her six Cabinet ministers. Once the Cabinet was sworn in, the remaining MLAs took their respective oaths, formally becoming members of the Delhi Assembly. The atmosphere inside the House was marked by enthusiasm, with lawmakers eager to begin their legislative duties.
The session began with legislators singing the national song, “Vande Mataram,” a tradition that underscores patriotism and unity among elected representatives. Several key political figures were present to witness the proceedings, including Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, who observed the session from the Speaker’s gallery. His presence highlighted the significance of the event for the party and the political landscape of Delhi.
The election for the new Speaker of the Delhi Assembly is scheduled to take place later in the day. BJP MLA Vijender Gupta is the frontrunner for the position and is widely expected to be elected as the Speaker. If elected, he will assume the responsibility of maintaining order and decorum in the House, as well as overseeing legislative proceedings and discussions on critical policy matters.
The newly constituted Assembly is expected to address several pressing issues concerning the capital city, including governance, public infrastructure, education, healthcare, and law and order. The BJP government, under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s leadership, has outlined its commitment to development and transparency in governance.
With the first session underway, political analysts anticipate significant discussions and debates in the coming weeks as the ruling party and opposition members engage in legislative business. The functioning of this Assembly will play a crucial role in shaping Delhi’s future and addressing the concerns of its citizens.
As the day progresses, all eyes will be on the election of the new Speaker and the subsequent legislative agenda that will set the tone for the government’s policies in the coming term.
