Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Orders Probe Into Remarks Against Speaker
Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has announced a comprehensive investigation into the alleged derogatory remarks made against Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar by BRS MLCs and other incidents linked to the recent political confrontation in the state.
Speaking in the Telangana Assembly on Wednesday, Revanth Reddy said the government would look into the allegations surrounding the remarks against the Speaker, who is a Dalit leader. The Chief Minister also announced a probe into an alleged purification programme reportedly conducted by BRS supporters near the farmhouse of BRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao.
The alleged purification ritual came after Congress workers and Dalit activists staged a protest near KCR’s farmhouse on September 8. The protesters were reportedly demonstrating against what they described as abusive and derogatory remarks directed at the Assembly Speaker.
Revanth Reddy said the government would examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged purification programme and would not remain silent on issues involving alleged untouchability and discrimination.
The Chief Minister also launched a strong attack on former Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, accusing him of conspiring to disrupt Assembly proceedings. According to Reddy, a meeting of BRS MLAs and MLCs held at KCR’s farmhouse on September 6 was part of a plan to create disruption in the Assembly.
Reddy alleged that KCR was worried that his alleged misrule between 2014 and December 2023 could come under scrutiny and that the BRS leadership therefore wanted to prevent discussions inside the House.
The Chief Minister further alleged that BRS MLAs and MLCs, allegedly provoked by KCR, behaved aggressively at the Assembly gate on September 7. He claimed that members of the opposition confronted government employees and police personnel after they were stopped from entering the Assembly premises.
The incident has added another layer of tension between the ruling Congress and the opposition BRS in Telangana. Political differences between the two parties have frequently spilled over into heated exchanges, but the latest controversy has particularly focused attention on allegations involving the dignity of the Assembly Speaker and claims of caste-based discrimination.
Taking aim at the former chief minister and his family, Revanth Reddy said Telangana society would reject what he described as feudal arrogance. He questioned the alleged act of purifying land after Dalit activists and Congress workers had walked through the area.
Reddy argued that the issue was not about the physical land but about attitudes towards Dalits and the alleged mindset of untouchability. He said the focus should instead be on removing discriminatory thoughts and practices from society.
“The arrogant thoughts of untouchability in the hearts of KCR and his family should be purified,” Reddy said in the Assembly.
The Chief Minister made it clear that his government would not remain inactive over allegations of untouchability, discrimination or the alleged purification programme.
The controversy comes at a politically sensitive time in Telangana, with the Congress government and BRS continuing to clash over governance, Assembly proceedings and the legacy of the previous administration. The proposed investigations are now expected to determine the facts behind the allegations and establish whether any action is required.
For the government, the issue has become more than a political exchange, with Reddy framing it as a question of dignity, equality and social justice. The opposition, meanwhile, is likely to respond to the allegations and defend its position.
As the probes move forward, attention will remain on the findings of the investigations and whether they lead to further political or legal action in Telangana.
