Shikhar Dhawan Divorced: Custody Fight Over Their Childsy
Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan’s marriage has ended as the Delhi Family Court approved his divorce from his estranged wife. The reason for the divorce was cruelty. Both Shikhar Dhawan and Shikhar Dhawan’s wife had agreed to this divorce because they hadn’t been living together as a married couple since August 2020.
The judge, Harish Kumar, pointed out that Shikhar Dhawan’s wife didn’t contest the divorce because she was okay with the decision. She knew that even if the court found her guilty of mistreating Dhawan, it wouldn’t harm her much because she had already received favorable rulings from Australian courts.
The divorce was granted under the Hindu Marriage Act, officially ending their marriage that had started in 2012.
Shikhar Dhawan also wanted full custody of their child, saying that it wasn’t good for the child to stay with his wife because she had acted poorly towards him from the beginning. Plus, there was a criminal case against her, which helped his case.
However, the custody battle was complicated because Australian and Indian courts had different opinions. The Australian court said that the custody matter should be settled there because the child was an Australian citizen living in Australia. The Indian court agreed, and both were told to drop their custody cases in the other country. This made things tricky because enforcing custody orders across borders depends on the cooperation of the foreign country’s authorities.
In the meantime, the court told Shikhar Dhawan’s wife to bring the child to India during school vacations for visits and overnight stays with Dhawan and his family. She also had to allow the child to meet Dhawan in Australia without supervision if Dhawan informed her in advance.
Shikhar Dhawan revealed some upsetting details about his marriage. Shikhar Dhawan said that he found out after getting married that his wife had only married him to get a lot of money from him. Right after the wedding, she threatened to make up false stories about him and harm his reputation and cricket career if he didn’t give her money.
Dhawan also mentioned that he had bought three properties in Australia with his own money. However, his wife forced him to make her the main owner of one property and a co-owner of two others. Shikhar Dhawan’s wife took a lot of money from selling one property and all the money from selling another. She was also demanding that he transfer the third property’s title to her.
In short, Shikhar Dhawan got a divorce because of cruelty. The custody battle over their child was tricky due to disagreements between Indian and Australian courts. The court tried to make visitation and meetings between the child and Dhawan easier.
