Karnataka By-Polls Victory: Shivakumar Attributes Success to Siddaramaiah’s Leadership and Congress Guarantees

Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Saturday praised the leadership of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the five guarantees promised by the Congress party for its resounding success in the recently held assembly bypolls. The Congress managed to retain crucial constituencies in the state, which has bolstered the party’s position ahead of the 2028 assembly elections.

Shivakumar, who is also the Congress state president, emphasized that the victories in the Channapatna, Shiggaon, and Sandur Assembly segments were not just a testament to the party’s stronghold but also a reflection of the success of its governance model. He stated that this win was a precursor to the 2028 elections, with the Congress poised to win again.

The by-elections, held on November 13, saw the Congress party perform exceptionally well. In Sandur, Congress candidate E. Annapoorna triumphed, defeating BJP’s ST Morcha president Bangaru Hanumanthu. This victory allowed the Congress to maintain its grip on the constituency, a significant achievement for the party in this region.

In the high-profile Channapatna segment, Congress candidate C.P. The win was considered a major blow to JD(S) and demonstrated the Congress’s growing influence in the area.

Similarly, in Shiggaon, Congress candidate Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan emerged victorious, defeating Bharath Bommai, the son of former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. This was another key victory, particularly as it came against a member of the influential Bommai family.

Shivakumar attributed these victories to the effective leadership of Siddaramaiah, the commitment of the Congress workers and MLAs, and the party’s focus on delivering promises, such as the five guarantees offered to the people. These guarantees, which cover various welfare schemes, were widely credited with galvanizing voter support for the Congress during the bypolls.

The Deputy Chief Minister also remarked on the symbolic nature of the losses faced by political dynasties in the state. He said that Nikhil Kumaraswamy and Bharath Bommai’s defeats were not just personal losses but also reflected the defeat of their prominent political parents, H.D. Kumaraswamy and Basavaraj Bommai.

Shivakumar highlighted that with these wins, the Congress party’s tally in the Karnataka Assembly had now risen to 138 seats, signaling the party’s continued dominance in the state. He also alluded to the fact that the party had received internal support from other quarters, although he refrained from specifying further details.

Addressing his political opponents, Shivakumar advised them to focus on development work instead of indulging in baseless allegations. He asserted that this would only lead to their continuous defeat, urging them to learn from the Congress’s approach to governance and public welfare.

The results of the bypolls, which have seen Congress consolidate its position in key constituencies, offer a promising outlook for the party as it gears up for future elections. The victories have solidified Congress’s presence in Karnataka and reaffirmed the influence of its leadership, particularly Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar.
