Shubman Gill has been called as India’s “new star on the rise” by the ICC.
Shubman Gill of India is one of the most sought-after players in international cricket right now, igniting the field with his elegant and aggressive hitting, backed by a massive weight of runs off his bat in recent months. With three centuries in the IPL as well as 890 runs in a season that saw him win the Orange Cap as well as the MVP award following a ferociously stunning run of form, he has solidified his position as a cornerstone of Indian batting for years to come.
On the World Test Championship website, the ICC on Thursday featured a video promoting Gill, referring to him as India’s “new star on the rise.” The video clip featured Gill’s own interviews as well as those with a number of his teammates and opponents in the World Test Championship final, which is taking place at The Oval in London right now.
One of them was Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, who would open the batting for Gill in the WTC championship match. Shubman Gill has a lot of promise, Rohit declared to the cameras. The next great thing for Indian cricket, without a doubt.” During the well-known 2020–21 tour of Australia, Gill made his Test debut for his country, taking Prithvi Shaw’s position at the top of the order. He was in charge of a significant 91 on the illustrious final day at the Gabba, which helped pave the way for that triumph. He is playing in his 16th Test match, and he already has two centuries at the highest level.
The guy who is the next great thing is guided by Rohit, and thus far, Gill’s 2023 has been outstanding on all fronts. “He possesses all the qualities necessary for success at this level. I simply hope he keeps up his recent strong form,” he says. This year, Gill has recorded centuries in each of the three international forms, including a double century against New Zealand earlier in the year. He scored 890 runs in a season in which he won the orange cap as well as the MVP award following a ferociously brilliant run of form, staking his claim as a cornerstone of Indian batting for years to come. He also scored three hundreds in the IPL.
Along with Cameron Green and Virat Kohli, Rohit was not the only player to compliment Gill on his performance for the young Punjab hitter. The opening batter received praise from Indian coach Rahul Dravid as well: “I observed him in 2018 when he was playing in the U-19 World Cup. He was clearly destined to be a very outstanding player for team India, as you could see.
Along with the promise Gill has consistently shown in his brief playing time, Dravid also noted the effort Gill has put into enhancing his game and consistency over the past year. He’s had a rare gift his entire life, but during the past year, everything has come together. We’re getting to watch a player of the highest calibre, and perhaps this is just the beginning of many fantastic years for Shubman.
As they begin the batting and work to chase down the Australian first innings total, which might rise beyond 450 and give them an unbeatable lead in the Test match, Gill will play a major role with Rohit.
