Sindalah, NEOM’s first luxury destination, opens in Saudi.

Sindalah, NEOM’s first luxury destination, is expected to significantly contribute to Saudi Arabia’s economy by generating 3,500 jobs by 2028. As part of the ambitious NEOM project, Sindalah aims to establish itself as a premier tourist and leisure hub, featuring luxurious resorts, fine dining, and world-class recreational facilities. The development is designed to attract high-end tourism and offer various employment opportunities in hospitality, retail, and other sectors. This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan to diversify the economy, reduce dependence on oil, and promote the tourism sector as a key driver of economic growth and job creation.

The NEOM Board of Directors unveiled Sindalah, the first luxury island destination under NEOM, on Sunday, October 27. Located in the Red Sea, Sindalah represents the initial physical showcase of NEOM, the ambitious $500 billion mega-tourism project in Saudi Arabia. The opening of Sindalah, which was initially announced in December 2022 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, marks a major milestone in NEOM’s development, signaling progress in the Kingdom’s quest to transform its tourism industry under Saudi Vision 2030.

Sindalah’s transformation from concept to reality was achieved in two years, thanks to a massive collaborative effort involving a 30,000-strong workforce, four local contracting partners, and up to 60 subcontractors. The project exemplifies NEOM’s capability to conceive and deliver unique, forward-thinking destinations that aim to place Saudi Arabia at the forefront of the global luxury tourism market. In a statement from NEOM, the development was described as a “significant step in realizing the Kingdom’s tourism ambitions,” reaffirming its commitment to building innovative new destinations.

The island spans approximately 840,000 square meters and is set amid the picturesque, azure waters of the Red Sea. Strategically located just 17 hours from popular Mediterranean destinations, Sindalah is designed to serve as NEOM’s gateway to the Red Sea, offering accessible and convenient docking for yacht owners from Europe, Saudi Arabia, and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The island aims to cater to the luxury tourism sector, with expectations of attracting 2,400 daily guests by 2028.

NEOM’s Chief Executive Nadhmi Al-Nasr expressed excitement over the opening, stating, “NEOM is committed to supporting the Kingdom’s new era of luxury tourism, with the opening of Sindalah.” He added that the new destination offers a “first glimpse” of the future, giving visitors a preview of the wider portfolio of destinations and developments that NEOM plans to roll out. The project aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, the nation’s ambitious framework to diversify its economy, reduce its reliance on oil, and develop sectors such as tourism to become primary contributors to the economy.

Sindalah is expected to generate around 3,500 jobs by 2028, providing significant employment opportunities in the hospitality, retail, and tourism sectors. This will be a crucial contribution to the Kingdom’s broader economic goals, as it seeks to boost job creation, attract international investment, and increase tourism revenue. The development of Sindalah reflects the changing landscape of Saudi Arabia’s tourism industry, where luxury and sustainability are being prioritized to appeal to global travelers.

The island boasts an 86-berth marina with a yacht club designed by Stefano Ricci, a world-renowned luxury designer. The marina provides various facilities to accommodate yachts, including docking stations, offshore buoys, and yacht management services, catering to a new sailing season in the region. It promises to be a major attraction for yachting enthusiasts, positioning itself as a premier destination in the Middle East for luxury sailing and maritime activities.

Accommodation on Sindalah includes a range of high-end options, featuring 440 rooms, 88 exclusive villas, and 218 luxury serviced apartments. These accommodations are designed to offer comfort and elegance, with each space providing stunning views of the island’s natural surroundings. The properties are tailored to meet the demands of affluent guests seeking unique experiences in an environment that merges modern luxury with the natural beauty of the Red Sea.

Sindalah’s waters are home to a remarkable variety of marine life, including over 1,100 species of fish, 45 of which are unique to the NEOM waters. The biodiversity extends to more than 300 species of coral, highlighting the pristine condition of the island’s marine environment. The abundance of marine life not only adds to the island’s natural allure but also presents opportunities for eco-tourism and sustainable development initiatives that emphasize marine conservation and environmental stewardship.

Beyond its luxurious accommodations and marina, Sindalah will offer a range of recreational and lifestyle amenities designed to cater to the desires of elite travelers. Fine dining restaurants, upscale shopping outlets, and wellness centers will be part of the island’s offerings, ensuring a holistic luxury experience. The development will also feature various entertainment options, including water sports, diving, and cultural events, providing a comprehensive resort experience.

The launch of Sindalah is a crucial component in NEOM’s strategy to showcase its broader vision for the future. By creating high-end, sustainable destinations, NEOM seeks to redefine luxury tourism in the region and compete with established global destinations. This project aims to attract international tourists who are looking for a unique blend of luxury and adventure, while also appealing to the domestic and regional market.

The island’s development is a testament to Saudi Arabia’s commitment to implementing its Vision 2030 objectives, particularly in expanding the tourism sector as a cornerstone of economic diversification. Sindalah, as the first of many anticipated developments under NEOM, sets the stage for future projects that will continue to reshape the country’s tourism landscape and establish it as a world-leading destination for luxury, innovation, and sustainability.

As the Kingdom continues to open up to international tourism, projects like Sindalah will play a vital role in transforming perceptions of Saudi Arabia, offering visitors a new narrative that goes beyond traditional tourism experiences and ventures into a realm where luxury meets futuristic living.
