The PM honours 21 Indian heroes by naming the 21 largest islands in Andaman and Nicobar
The National Memorial to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, which will be erected on the formerly known as Ross Islands, was also unveiled by PM Modi.
In a ceremony held on Monday in honour of Parakram Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ 21 largest nameless islands new names in their honour.
Additionally, PM Modi revealed a replica of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, formerly known as the Ross Islands, where a national memorial honouring Netaji would be erected. Amit Shah, the home minister, attended the ceremony in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as well.
The largest unnamed island was given Major Somnath Sharma’s name in honour of the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, who died in combat on November 3, 1947, while battling Pakistani infiltrators close to Srinagar Airport.
These islands bear the names of the 21 recipients of the Param Vir Chakra, including Major Somnath Sharma, Subedar and Hony Captain (then Lance Naik) Karam Singh, MM, 2nd Lt. Rama Raghoba Rane, Nayak Jadunath Singh, Company Havildar Major Piru Singh, Capt. GS Salaria, Lieutenant Colonel (then Major) Dhan Singh Thapa, Subedar Joginder Singh, Major
In 2021, the government proclaimed January 23 to be Parakram Diwas in honour of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birthday.
When the Prime Minister visited Ross Islands in 2018, he christened it Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep in recognition of the historical importance of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and to pay tribute to Netaji’s memory. Shaheed Dweep and Swaraj Dweep were also given new names for Neil Island and Havelock Island.
“The Prime Minister has always placed the utmost importance on paying respect to the country’s true heroes. Following in this vein, it has now been decided to name the 21 largest unidentified islands of the island group after the 21 recipients of the Param Vir Chakra “The PMO statement was read.
The largest nameless island bears the name of the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, the second largest unnamed island bears the name of the second recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, and so on.
This action will serve as a lasting memorial to the soldiers who gave their lives to preserve the integrity and sovereignty of the country.
On the occasion of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary, Prime Minister Modi will present floral tributes at his portrait in the Central Hall of Parliament House alongside Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla, Leaders of the parties in the Lok and Rajya Sabha, Members of Parliament, former Members of Parliament, and other dignitaries.
On January 23, 1978, the then-President of India, N Sanjiva Reddy, unveiled the painting of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in the Central Hall of Parliament House. It was acknowledged, according to the Lok Sabha Secretariat, that floral tributes may be a powerful tool for educating the nation’s youth about the achievements and efforts of these towering national giants.
In light of this, the Lok Sabha Secretariat’s PRIDE, or Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies, has introduced the Know Your Leaders initiative.
Netaji, who was born on January 23, 1897, was a key figure in the struggle for Indian independence.
Founder of the Azad Hind Fauj was Subhash Chandra Bose. Although there is debate about Bose’s passing in a plane crash in Taipei on August 18, 1945, the Central government verified his demise in the tragedy in a 2017 RTI (Right to Information) request.
The Prime Minister inaugurated the hologram statue of the independence hero at India Gate in Delhi last year to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Netaji’s birth.
