Tulsi Vivah 2023: Unveiling the Mythical Tapestry
According to Hindu Scriptures, a formidable demon, born of Lord Shiva’s wrath, posed a dire threat to the gods. To counter this menace, the demon was advised by Shukracharya, his Guru, to marry Vrinda—a devout follower of Lord Vishnu and a woman of unwavering faith.
Vrinda’s commitment to her Pativrata Dharma, her spousal duties and virtuous character, rendered the demon, Jalandhar, impervious to defeat. The deities found themselves powerless against him. In a desperate bid to safeguard her husband’s well-being, Vrinda embarked on a puja ritual. Little did she know, Lord Vishnu, aware that success in the ritual would grant Jalandhar immortality, assumed the guise of Jalandhar himself and joined Vrinda in the ritual, ultimately compromising her character.
Upon discovering the ruse and realising it was Lord Vishnu, not Jalandhar, who had sat beside her, Vrinda, heartbroken and betrayed, cursed Lord Vishnu, turning him into the sacred stone, Shaligram. Goddess Laxmi, understanding the gravity of the situation, beseeched Vrinda to lift the curse. Vrinda, benevolent yet resolute, acquiesced, releasing Lord Vishnu from the curse but choosing to end her own life.
In gratitude for Vrinda’s sacrifice and unwavering devotion, Lord Vishnu granted her a unique blessing—to become the revered Tulsi plant. He promised to marry her in the form of Shaligram, and from that day forward, offering Tulsi Patra became an integral part of his puja. Hindus worldwide commemorate Tulsi Vivah, celebrating the divine union of Tulsi and Shaligram, honouring the sacred tale that transcends time.
