Hyderabad: Two workers were killed and nine others injured after a suspected reactor blast triggered a fire at a pharmaceutical unit in Telangana’s Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district late on Friday night.
The incident took place at a facility in Pochampally mandal while workers were changing shifts. A sudden blast inside the unit caused a fire, sending panic through the plant and prompting emergency teams to rush to the site.
Nine others sustained injuries, including two people who suffered burns over more than 50 per cent of their bodies. The remaining seven workers suffered minor injuries.
Those with extensive burns are expected to require specialised medical care and prolonged treatment. Their families were informed and are waiting anxiously for updates on their condition.
A fire official said emergency services received information about the blast at around 10:30 p.m. Fire engines from Choutuppal and nearby areas were sent to the factory. Firefighters worked to contain the flames and eventually brought the fire under control.
The bodies of the deceased workers were shifted for post-mortem examination. Their identities were being verified, while authorities were also coordinating with the families and the hospitals treating the injured.
Investigation into the blast
Police have registered a case and begun an investigation into the incident. Officials are examining whether the blast was caused by a technical failure, a chemical reaction, excessive pressure, equipment damage, or a possible lapse in safety procedures.
The precise cause has not yet been confirmed. Investigators are expected to inspect the reactor, review maintenance records, examine production logs, and question workers and company officials. They may also study whether safety alarms, pressure-control systems, emergency exits, fire equipment, and protective gear were functioning properly.
