US deports 2,790 illegal Indian immigrants
This year, about 100 Indian nationals were deported from the UK after their identities were carefully verified, officials confirmed.
New Delhi: Since the beginning of this year, at least 2,790 Indian nationals who were living in the United States without proper documentation or legal status have been deported back to India, the government confirmed on Thursday.
Addressing the media at his weekly press briefing, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the deportations were carried out after due verification of nationality and credentials of those individuals.
They were illegally staying there. We verified their credentials and their nationality, and they have returned. This is the status till yesterday, that is, 29th October,” Jaiswal said, providing a clear picture of the scale of deportations from the US.
The spokesperson’s comments come amid growing global concern over illegal migration, especially as many Indians continue to risk their lives and savings to enter foreign countries through unsafe routes. In recent years, there has been a noticeable rise in cases involving human smuggling networks that lure people with promises of jobs, education, or permanent residency abroad, only for them to end up facing legal troubles, detention, or deportation.
Officials familiar with the matter say that the Indian government has been closely coordinating with foreign authorities to ensure that all deportations take place following due process. The verification process is aimed at confirming the nationality of each individual before accepting their repatriation.
nationality was duly verified by us.
The figure highlights how multiple countries have been tightening immigration regulations and enforcing stricter deportation policies. While the US remains the most frequent source of such cases, European nations, including the UK, have also reported a steady rise in the number of Indians being sent back for overstaying visas or entering without valid documents.
Government officials say India continues to maintain diplomatic dialogue with partner countries to address these challenges. The MEA, along with Indian embassies abroad, has been advising citizens to follow proper immigration procedures and to stay away from agents or middlemen who offer illegal shortcuts.
As deportations rise, the human stories behind these numbers serve as a stark reminder of the emotional and financial toll such journeys can take — on individuals, their families, and the communities they leave behind.
