Uttarakhand Tragedy: Two Dead, Ten Missing After Tempo Traveller Falls Into Alaknanda Gorge

At least two people were killed, eight injured, and ten others reported missing after a tempo traveller carrying 20 passengers fell into a deep gorge and plunged into the Alaknanda river valley in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district on Thursday morning, June 26, 2025. The vehicle was reportedly en route to Badrinath Dham as part of the Char Dham Yatra when the accident occurred at around 7:30 a.m.

The tempo traveller was carrying pilgrims from Udaipur in Rajasthan who had come to Uttarakhand for the sacred Char Dham pilgrimage. According to initial reports, the vehicle lost control and fell into the gorge under circumstances that are yet to be determined.

The confirmation was given by Satyendra Singh Bhandari, a member of the Red Cross Society rescue team. He added that ten passengers are still unaccounted for and rescue teams are making every effort to trace them.

Seven people, including three women and two children, were injured in the incident. All of them have been hospitalized and are currently undergoing treatment. Their condition is said to be stable, but they remain under close medical observation.

The tempo traveller is believed to have veered off the road while navigating through the hilly terrain, which is prone to accidents, especially during the monsoon season.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and assured that all necessary steps are being taken to assist the victims. He also stated that rescue operations would continue until the missing are found.

However, the difficult mountainous routes and unpredictable weather conditions make travel during the yatra season challenging and sometimes dangerous.
