Legendary Indian filmmaker K. Viswanadh, who was known for his iconic works in Telugu cinema, passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday 2nd Feb’ 2023. The director had been undergoing treatment for quite some time due to age-related illnesses and was lately admitted to a hospital where he died.

Viswanadh Garu was one of the most celebrated directors in the Telugu film industry and was known for his realistic story-telling. He was the recipient of several awards, including the prestigious ‘Raghupati Venkaiah Award’ in 1998, and the Nandi Awards in 2004 and 2006. He had also been honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Film Festival of India in 2013.

K.Viswanath Garu directed over 50 films in Telugu, Hindi and Tamil languages and he is also known for his acting in Yaaradi Nee Mohini film in Tamil. His film is India’s official submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 59th Academy Awards. The award went to the blockbuster film Swathimuthyam, starring Kamal Hassan.

He began working as an assistant director in the Telugu-Tamil film Pathala Bhairavi in 1951. Viswanath made his directorial debut in 1965 with the Telugu film Aatma Gowravam, which won the Nandi Award for Best Feature Film of the Year. Viswanath went on to make women-centric dramas such as Chelleli Kapuram , Sarada, O Seeta Katha, and Jeevana Jyoti. The artistic touch in his craft was first visible in Siri Siri Muvva.

Director K. Viswanadh Garu is very well-known for his realistic portrayal of middle-class life and his films had a strong emphasis on music. He was considered to be a pioneer of the ‘New Wave’ cinema movement in India and his works have had a major influence on the Telugu film industry.

In 2016, Kasinadhuni Viswanath received the 48th Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Padma Shri in 1992, five National Awards, 20 Nandi Awards (from the government of Andhra Pradesh), and ten Filmfare trophies, including the Lifetime Achievement award, are among his other honours.
