World Heart Day: AIG Hospitals’ Lifesaving Initiative for GHMC Workers’ Cardiac Health
On the occasion of World Heart Day, AIG Hospitals embarked on a noble mission by organizing a massive, free cardiac health check-up camp exclusively for the dedicated sanitation workers of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Surprisingly, the camp revealed that a significant 27% of these unsung heroes had suspected heart diseases that had gone undiagnosed until now.
The decision to focus on this often overlooked segment of our urban population was driven by the realization that preventive healthcare remains elusive for those toiling at the grassroots level. Dr. D Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman of AIG Hospitals, expressed the heartfelt sentiment behind this initiative, saying, “It was our way of saying thank you for keeping our city clean and hygienic.”
One striking revelation from the camp was the alarming prevalence of anemia among female workers. More than 35% of them had hemoglobin levels well below the normal range. While iron supplements were provided to these individuals during the camp, Dr. Reddy emphasized the need for a comprehensive dietary plan to address this issue. A more in-depth investigation into this concern is underway to determine the appropriate medical approach.
Sri Ronald Rose, Commissioner of GHMC, commended AIG Hospitals for extending the umbrella of preventive healthcare to GHMC workers. He remarked on the camp’s success, evident in the number of workers diagnosed and receiving necessary treatment. The data gathered during the camp has prompted GHMC to prioritize the health and well-being of its workforce comprehensively. Beyond heart health, GHMC workers will undergo screening for lung disorders and cancers, leveraging AIG’s clinical expertise.
Dr. Rajeev Menon, Clinical Director at AIG Hospitals, shed light on the major risk factors for heart diseases identified among these workers. Smoking and the consumption of high-carbohydrate, fried foods cooked in reused oil emerged as key culprits. Of the 654 workers screened for cardiovascular diseases, 177 exhibited symptoms of hypertension and other cardiac issues. Subsequent examinations with ECG and 2D ECHO confirmed heart ailments in 58 individuals. These individuals will now undergo further investigations, followed by the development of tailored treatment plans. Medications for hypertension were dispensed on-site during the camp.
AIG Hospitals and GHMC will collaborate to extend health screenings to the entire GHMC workforce, comprising more than 4500 members. The comprehensive health check-ups will encompass gastrointestinal diseases, lung disorders, cancers, and neurological issues over the next year. Dr. D Nageshwar Reddy emphasized the importance of this initiative, saying, “These findings serve as indicators of potential undiagnosed illnesses that may be prevalent among GHMC workers. These individuals are responsible for maintaining the city’s hygiene, making it our duty to safeguard their health. We will work closely with GHMC officials to ensure that every member of the workforce receives a thorough health assessment.”
On celebrating World Heart Day, AIG Hospitals has not only underscored the importance of heart health but also demonstrated its commitment to the well-being of those who tirelessly contribute to the cleanliness and sanitation of our cities. This initiative serves as a poignant reminder that caring for the heart health of our community’s unsung heroes is a responsibility we should all embrace, not just on World Heart Day but everyday.
