India monsoon: Heavy rains hit Vijayawada, Delhi alert.
potentially impacting normal activities and increasing the risk of flooding.
Monsoon activity is expected to pick up pace on Thursday, August 14, 2025, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting a fresh spell of moderate to intense rainfall across several northern states.
According to the IMD, the wet weather will primarily affect Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, north Madhya Pradesh, and western Uttar Pradesh. The department has cautioned that some areas could see heavy to very heavy rainfall, which may cause waterlogging, traffic snarls, and potential flooding in low-lying regions.
In the south, Telangana is already feeling the full force of the monsoon. The state has been battered by heavy rains, with overnight showers drenching multiple districts. Data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) revealed that three locations recorded more than 20 centimetres of rainfall in a single night — an intense downpour that left streets flooded and daily life disrupted.
The heavy rain also caused significant disruption to air travel in Hyderabad. Several flights to and from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport were either cancelled or diverted on Wednesday due to poor weather and low visibility. Airport officials said a total of 11 flights had to be diverted to other airports during the day. Of these, seven managed to return and land back in Hyderabad later in the evening, once conditions improved. Passengers faced long waits, with many spending hours in airport lounges hoping for updates on their rescheduled departures.
For many in Telangana, the rains have brought a mixed bag of relief and hardship. Farmers welcomed the showers, seeing them as a much-needed boost for crops like paddy and cotton. However, urban residents, particularly in Hyderabad, had to navigate flooded roads, stalled vehicles, and traffic chaos. Emergency services have been on high alert, with municipal authorities deploying teams to clear clogged drains and remove fallen trees.
As the monsoon system strengthens, authorities are urging people in affected states to stay updated on weather advisories, avoid unnecessary travel in heavy rain, and take precautions against waterborne diseases. The coming days could bring more wet spells, and for now, much of India is bracing for nature’s annual downpour in full force.
