BJP Aims to Retain Power in Multi-Cornered Fight After Tripura Election: 10 Facts
Elections for the Tripura Assembly: Tipra Motha, the new party founded by former king Pradyot Kishore Debbarma with the central demand of Greater Tipraland, may dampen the BJP’s campaign.
The ruling BJP is hoping to win large in Tripura’s election, which features multiple contenders. Unexpectedly, the CPM and the Congress have teamed up, and the Trinamool is also working hard. New party Tipra Motha has all the cards in the event of a hung house.
Here is a 10-point summary of this interesting topic:
- Tripura was dominated by the CPM for more than 30 years until the surprise result of the 2018 election, when the BJP made history by capturing 36 of the 60 seats in a state where it had essentially no representation.
- Despite having a majority of more than 31, the BJP still forged an alliance with the local IPFT (Indigenous Progressive Front of Tripura), which received eight seats, as insurance against any MLA defections.
- Manik Sarkar, a four-time chief minister of the CPM, who presided over Tripura for 35 years and joined forces with the Congress, is in charge of the party’s election campaign. Only 13 seats are left for the Congress after the Left Front contests 47 of the state’s 60 seats.
- The CPM garnered 16 seats in 2018, but the Congress, which served as the primary opposition in the previous house, received none. With their partnership, the CPM is seeking to get support in 13 seats. However, the collaboration has drawn criticism from both parties’ Kerala chapters, where they have been bitter rivals for many years.
- The Tipra Motha, a new party founded by ex-royal Pradyot Kishore Debbarma with the goal of achieving Greater Tipraland as its central demand, could derail the BJP’s campaign. Despite having the neighbourhood party IPFT on its side, the BJP’s hold on several seats has weakened over the past five years. IPFT was completely defeated in the Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections in 2021 and had to settle for only five seats to run in this election.
- The BJP had first made an effort to get along with the Tipra Motha, but its overtures had been rejected. The Tipra Motha strengthened its stance when the BJP said it would not permit the separation of Tripura, calling the BJP’s claim that it was the “B Team of CPM-Congress” backfiring.
- “The BJP is Nagaland’s B-Team. They are a B-Team of another party in Meghalaya, Shillong, and the Garo Hills. You work for a rival party in Mizoram as their B-Team. You represent the AIADMK’s B-Team in Tamil Nadu. You are the Akali Dal’s B-Team in Punjab. The BJP is the B-team of many Indian political groups. Tipra Motha refuses to submit or make concessions “said Mr. Debbarma, a candidate for 42 seats on his party’s ticket.
- Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam and the BJP’s regional spokesman, forecast that the party will fare significantly better in this round’s elections in all three northeastern states.
- “The BJP will become a more significant political force in Meghalaya. We will maintain power in Tripura with a larger margin, and we will re-establish government with the NDPP in Nagaland “According to Mr. Sarma, who spoke exclusively to NDTV. Manik Saha, the chief minister of Tripura, forecast a “tsunami” in the BJP’s favour.
- On February 27, elections are scheduled in Meghalaya and Nagaland. On March 2, there will be a vote count.
